    Hey all,

This is the first source I go for video editing needs. I have a project that I'm going to start. Just wanted a second set of eyes (or more) to make sure I complete the project right.

    Level of Experience:
    • Beginner to intermediate

    The Job:

    Details:
    1. Have Multiple DVDs containing the source content.
    2. Needs to be edited and retooled for upload to Youtube or Equivalent and DVD content for later.

    Done so far:
    1. Ripped the DVDs using mac the ripper to a local drive.

    Questions:
    1. When extracting the VOB files to something useable with FCP, is it best to convert the VOB to DV or MPEG?
    2. What's a better tool to use to convert DVD
    A. MPEG Streamline
    B. Handbrake
    C. or something else.
    3. What are the recommended export settings for audio and video to assure the content doesn't have artifacts?

    thanks as always.

    1 DV
2 Experiment. Once you demux the VOB, use Quicktime Pro to convert to DV.
3 DVD has max bitrate around 9.5Mb/s depending on audio. Using VBR modes in Compressor experiment at 5, 6 and 7 Mb/s and choose one that matches your taste.

    thanks edDV.

    1. What do you recommend I use for the conversion to DV?
    2. Can I use that to demux the VOB or do you recommend another software.

MpegStreamclip, with the QT Mpeg-2 addon, can both demux the VOB and
export it to DV Stream within MpegStreamclip.
I like it a bit better over using Quicktime Pro, but really the steps to achieve
your goal are the same in either app.

You'll need it to demux your DVDs VOBS, if you want to reuse the assets unedited,
to make a new DVD. Otherwise DV Stream is the only
digestable format FCP accepts without re-rendering the footage.

for making your edits ready for Youtube, I would export the edits out following steps
    outlined here.

    Conversion Recommedations
    1. File > Export to DV with the following options

    or

    2. Using MpegStreamclip to demux the file by
file > demux > Demux to M2V and AIFF

    or

    3. An option that I didn't specify above?

    Conversion Process
    1. Using MpegStreamclip to demux the file by
file > demux > Demux to M2V and AIFF

    Question:
    1. Which MpegStreamclip demux option should I be using?

Demux to M2V and AIFF < -- I'm thinking this since best uncompressed option=
    Demux to M2V and M1A < -- Don't recognize m1a used often
Demux to M2V and AC3 < -- Or is this better because of dolby sound
Demux to M2V <-- require audio file as well
Demux to M1A <-- require audio file as well
Demux to AC3 <-- uncertain since selected AIFF
Demux to Unscaled M2V AND AIFF <-- Read online unscaled isn't best when is unscaled actually used?
Demux to Headed M2V AND AIFF <-- Unsure what the headed option are.
Demux to Headed M2V AND M1A
Demux to Headed M2V AND AC3
    Demux to Headed M2V

    -- Related questions:
    1. If the file is being demuxed exporting to video and audio file then how do I go about muxing the file back unless there is an option in mpegstreamclip to demux and mux file into a DV format?
    2. If so could you please provide the steps I would need to do such a thing?

    @ lansing:
Your answer is simple my friend.

    1. If you are going to add the footage to FCP to use to make a new DVD,
OR, to make files to put on youtube, as in your original post,
you have to open the VOBs in MpegStreamclip, with the QT Mpeg-2
add on, and export them to DV Stream for ingestion into FCP.

    the settings:
    DV25 is standard from VOBs.
If the footage opens and plays in MpegStreamclip ( The VOBS) as 16:9
SET THE EXPORT TO 16:9. otherwise, set it to 4:3.
    NTSC, 720 x 480, 29.97fps is correct.

If the footage (VOBS) are progressive, then I could see MpegStreamclip
giving you these options as default. if so, they are ok to use.

    2. This option you would need ONLY IF you are going to drop the
demuxed VOBS directly into a DVD authoring program such as
DVD Studio Pro or Toast Titanium. Demuxed VOBs will NOT import into
    FCP for use.

The demux choices would depend upon what MpegStreamclip says about
the footage when it is open in the main window. IF the Audio type says
it is 128 AC3, then you would demux as File--Demux--to m2v and Ac3.
If it reads as aiff, then demux as File--Demux--to m2v and Aiff.

    1. see my answer to #2.

    your welcome.
