If you use a software like Fair Use Wizard to convert a DVD to avi sub/idx and the resulting subtitles are the wrong color,
First step (may be optional). Convert sub/idx to sup using Subtosup
Then use Subtitle Creator. Under Format, choose ntsc or pal, then Tools>Manipulate sup or Vobsub.
In new window click Open Sub and input your sub/idx or sup
Then change colors to be like in the screenshot:
Color 0 Black and tick transp
Color 1 Black
Color 2 White
Color 3 Black
Click Apply to All
And Save Sub as idx/sub
This will give subtitles with white letters with a black outline.

What version what this in ? It doesn't appear to be in the latest version.

With that setting letters go black, better to use:
Color 0 = black with transp tick
Color 1 = white
Color 2 = black
Color 3 = grey
