Hey guys,
I have searched, and searched, and tried 10 different DVD's, and need some serious help. Here's the details. My band recorded a live DVD. It's been edited, and I received a final copy on a memorex DL DVD. It plays in my Mac, my Samsung DVD player, my XBOX 360, no problem. The disc is region free, and no protected. I made a disc image in Toast 9, to burn copies for other people. I have a writemaster DVD burner, which burns DL discs.
I burned a copy on a Dynex DL DVD. It plays in the Samsung, and the XBOX. Not the Panasonic. I did some research, and saw that Verbatim is the best to use. I bought Verbatim DVD R DL discs today, and burned the disc image again in Toast 9. I STILL won't play in the Panasonic!
I need to make sure this will play in any DVD player, so what can this be? I've tried it with several discs, thinking it may have been a bad disc, but it plays everywhere else.
AND, the Panasonic DVD player DOES play burned DL discs, as that's what I was given as a test disc.
HELP! and Thanks!

Verbatim DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL?
Set top players are only required to play 'silvers' (factory pressed content) in order to be called a DVD player. Compatibility with +R/-R/+R DL/-R DL is a bonus; not all players can perform that.
That being said, Verbatim seems to have more satisfied customers with DVD+R DL media than with DVD-R DL. -
I'm using Verbatim DVD+R DL
I should have been more clear, the Panasonic is a DVD recorder, not just a player. It does play burned discs, for some reason, I can't get it to play this DL disc. Other single layers are no problem. -
You say that the Panasonic does play at least some burned DL discs. What brand, type? Get those and try again.
Although Verbatims are the best by far for DL, players are fussier about DL than anything else. What works for a lot of players doesn't necessarily work for all. For maximum compatibility, avoid DL if possible. Or, be prepared to do a lot of experimentation. -
Does your panasonic dvd recorder record on -R media and not +R media ?
My panasonic stand alone dvd recorder only records on -R media & plays -R media fine, it will NOT play +R media of either single or DL type unless it is booktyped to DVD-ROM -
I'm presuming you made the disc image while in the Toast Copy window and then used the Image File setting in the Copy window to burn the disc image to a new disc. That should have worked. However, there are two other ways you can try this. Mount the disc image and drag the VIDEO_TS folder to either the DVD-Rom (UDF) setting in the Copy window or to the DVD video from VIDEO_TS setting in the Video window. That might make a difference but probably not.

It's very strange. The Memorex DVD+R DL that was given to me, plays in the Panasonic just fine. It was burned directly from DVD studio Pro. From there, saved a disc image from toast, and made a copy from the disc image, on both Dynex DVD+R DL, and Verbatim DVD+R DL, and neither of those play in the Panasonic. Like I said, they DO however play in a Samsung, and an XBOX 360, with no issue at all. I know the Panasonic CAN play the disc, I am wondering if I was doing something wrong, and had some setting wrong in Toast. This is frustrating to me.
Frobozz, I did try to create a disc in Toast using the VIDEO_TS folder to the DVD-Rom (UDF) and get the same result. It plays everywhere but where I need it to.
Is there another program I could try other then Toast to burn the disc image? -
what do you call "region free" (all regions enabled?)
if yes use mydvdedit and modify it: uncheck region 7 (double-clic on an iFO file, in the GUI center/bottom/vertical tabVD)
PS: dvdsp does not do it (even if you ask for it)
for best compatibility, use LiquidCD (button video), I don't know exaxtly what toast does...
it will create to you an UDF1.02+ISO track (the most reliable format for dvd players)
PS: but you will lose special dvdsp features like jacket or internet access inside dvd

Maybe not the answer but I'll throw in my two cents.
It's gotta be a problem with using toast or the source DVD image! Verbatim DVD+R DL are flawless as far I know.
When I have problems with DVD's (Rare) I run them through DVD2oneX2 to create a new DVD image and then burn.

How do I check the booktype on the disc? I have not looked at this yet.
I did try to make a new copy, using Burn, by adding the VIDEO_TS folder, and get the same results. I'm starting to think it could be my burner. -
