What -- if anything -- converts Real Media files to other formats ? What other formats, and how good are the results ?

I keep hoping that VLC or GOM might add RM playback, just as they seem to have added playback for some FLV content a while back. I definitely do not want to install Real Player again, and comments here suggest that Real Alternative shares many of the same drawbacks.

Real Alternative shouldn't cause any problems, at least compared to Real One player. VLC and other players are unlikely to adopt Real as they would have to pay for the privilege to Real.

I use this method for conversion of RM and RMVB to AVI type formats using VirtualDub Mod and Avisynth and it's worked perfect so far: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=289872 or a similar alternative: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=231192
