I've been scouring the net looking at sites that will edit the foul language and nudity for your more promiscuous movies. I certainly like some of those movies but do not want my children to see and especially hear some of those things, even on my rated pg or pg-13 type movies!
Therefore, is there a way that I can remove some of the foul content off of my existing dvds and produce a cleaner version for my kids? One of them is the classic movie "Stripes", which is quite funny to watch as a family, but some of the scenes I wish wouldn't be in there. If there is a way, I would definately like to know. In addition, I do own a box that will filter some of the language but not any scenes I believe needs editing.
P.S. By the way, I did check on the dialog between the directors and these editing movie companies and so far the companies are still able to operate without being shut down.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I've never tried them, but Clean Films is a NetFlix style service that offers Family edited DVDs.

There is a new standalone dvd player from rca that is coming out which will filter dvd content. The players are going to be sold at Wal-Mart as well as other places. I think the cost is 80 dollars. You could try that.

The easiest way I've found to do this is to use decrypter, dvd2one or dvdshrink, and tmpgenc dvdauthor.
you rip the "movie only" with dvddecrypter, shrink it down to one layer dvd size with dvd2one (or shrink if you want to get rid of more extraneous features like foreign language tracks), then import into TDA for "editing" and burning. You can go through the film in TDA and remove the scenes you don't want. It is most helpful if you have the AC3 add-on for TDA so you can actually hear the scenes.
You will lose the menus and extra features, but if you really want them you could rip them too and re-author in TDA. It also doesn't allow you to mute the words, you have to cut out the frames, so the video jumps a little. Also, be prepared for some negative feedback in this forum about doing this.
hope this helps.
oh man, I just noticed this if for MAC - I don't know if this applies then -
The most sensible thing is to use my previous post.
then import into TDA for "editing" and burning. You can go through the film in TDA and remove the scenes you don't want.
The easiest and best editor I have come across so far is one called Moviemask Designer -- it allows you full control over editing, but you have to have their software to run it -- so it's pretty much computer only... -
It might work on dvdr. I do not know, as they aren't released just yet.

In Mac world, YadeX will allow you to select scenes and output a VIDEO_TS without the scenes you dislike. You could go down to individual cell level even. There is also Cinematize if you are willing to bring it into DV format for editing including using FCP's tone generator to bleep stuff out. But I have the sneaking suspicion you want to talk to the Wintel folks about this. -
Why not use that standalone player as it will not modify the disk? It will just filter out objectionable content.
-
pixeljammedia, you seem awlfully hostile considering last time I checked macs only control about 5 percent of the computer market.

I hadn't considered this. Have you tested it? I see on their site that mp2 is encoded AC3 2ch, but it also states that 5.1 AC3 cannot be reencoded. This indicates to me that it either can't accept 5.1 (which I'm pretty sure it does), or it leaves the 5.1 alone. I thought that it left the audio as is, it just cut out sections with the video.

That is not a pc soultion. That is a overall solution.(not computer related)

The standalone player is platform independent. The talk about Tmpgenc DVDauthor and decrypter and shrink etc. is all about Wintel. The afforementioned programs are not what the poster wants unless he has a Wintel box. So the talk about TDA belongs elsewhere.
-
The other talk was not me. I was merely trying to offer a platform independent solution.
-
Fine, whatever.
I say that we shouldn't have people talking about Decrypter and Tsunami and Shrink then gave a possible Mac Solution.
You then called me hostile for trying to keep the conversation on track (e.g. about Macs) and then you served up the flame bait about Macs being 5 percent of the market...
I mistakenly lumped you into the other posters though you were only talking about the player and for that I apologize, but geez. Why the ad hominem attacks? I said time to get PC talk out of this Mac forum. I think that's a reasonable request. -
Yeah, sorry for my involvement here. I saw the topic which interests me and overlooked the MAC part at first.

come on guys.... cant we all get along.
Even if some "pc" answers were told they seem to be in good cause. -
I think the only way that you can be sure that the "foul content" ( in your eyes and ears) is completely removed from a DVD movie is for YOU to personally edit each disc individually. What these second party companies edit may/may not be what YOU want edited -------
So, it seems that you will need to convert the DVD into some format that is more easily edited at the frame level, then re-encode to DVD format and burn.
There is a easy way to edit out chapters of DVD's but damn you will cut up Stripes if ya do that!!!!

I say, either don't let the kids watch the movie if they're too young, or let them watch it, and give em an edge on the playground. so at least they can swear back at the punk kid that's bothering them. But, that's just me. If you want to do this on a Mac, you'll have to rip it to your HD, then use something like Cinematize or DVDxDV to convert to DV format, import into iMovie, FCP or FCE, edit out the scenes you don't want (or just silence out naughty words), import into iDVD or convert to MPEG 2 and AC3 for DVDSP or Sizzle, set up the DVD, and burn to DVD-R. All-in-all a huge hassle. Or else, you could realize that words are just words (and that chicks in the shower scene is only offensive in our warped puritanical society), and if your kids can't handle them, then maybe they shouldn't be watching this movie, as they probably couldn't fully appreciate it anyways. The choice is yours.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté." -
I'm with wiseweasel, BIG TIME. I have very fond memories about watching Terminator 2 w/ my dad
It kicked ass! ( I was a lot younget then
) Censoring content of dvd's you didn't author is... I don't know... (In the eyes of someone w/ a film degree... it's wrong). (But so is a lot of stuff!) So unless you want a big pain in the but... either let them watch it and explain what's good and bad to them, or enjoy those movies on babysitter night! Peace! (just my 2cents!)
