Can someone say if Sub tile Edit has hot keys for adding color codes (max three needed) for editing and creating subs.
The subject line is to look for a stand alone keyboard program that can remap three keys to the code of a few SRT colors-- no more than three needed for use with old style membrane keyboards. Mine is a Belkin 6565 and still in good shape. I thought if I could program three plus the terminate color keys on the numeric pad (1 - 2 - 3) would work well
I guess actually an additional key to turn the font color off is needed. So an example is:
<font color="#ffff00"> {text} then </font> to turn the color off.

Since my question SE informed me yes there are are some shortcuts for color in earlier releases of SE. Those look like the screen shot at the path SE > Options > Shortcuts > scroll down to List and text.
I was not successful in getting it to work because no guidance on it.
Has anyone just simply used the color options successfully in the past?
I do know that manually entering a color like the earlier example shows up on the video in SE using the recommended player.Last edited by loninappleton; 1st Nov 2025 at 14:54.

For any one observing or searching this topic I came back to this today since I now have a good grasp of how to use the color codes in Subtitle Edit and to use the 'turn off color switch' which is </font>.
Subtitle Edit automatically uses </font> at the end of the line to turn off the color.
To make a single word in color use the text box and start at the word and insert.
So from start to finish ....
Go > Subtitle Edit > Options > General > Shortcuts > scroll down to 'List view and Text Box' > scroll down to 'color' >
select that, then set the hot key.
To set the hotkey where color 4 is selected I checked Control Box (bottom) + Alt Box and finally at the word KEY, open that and select a keyboard key. I found it best to stick with the F-keys such as F12 because many other key combinations are in use for active SE shortcut combinations.
So in the example to get your color, type Cntl-Alt-F12 while using the SE text box in an active SRT editing.
One thing I could add here since there is only HTML code is make list of the colors. In other words, without such a list it's guesswork.
When I've completed setting that up, I'll add an update. -
Since last time I practiced using the optional codes in SE at the Options > Shortcuts > list location. What I'm showing here is a few of those with color tags so one would know which color is accessed by which F-key combination I ser up. It appears that cntl+alt and an Fkey selection works the best.
Also on this post I show some other codes for experimentation: purple, olive etc. But going crazy with colors is not something I would do and perhaps not at all. The phrase (a long silence) was simply a line I chose to practice with from an srt loaded into Subtitle Edit.
<font color="#FFA500">( a long silence)</font> orange cntl+alt+F6
<font color="#FFC0CB">( a long silence)</font> White cntl+alt+F5
<font color="#FFFF00">(a long silence)</font> yellow cntl+alt+F11
<font color="#00FFFF">(a long silence)</font> light blue cntl+alt+F9
<font color="#00FF00">(a long silence)</font> med. green cntl+alt+F10
