I've come across multiple websites charging money to translate subtitle with AI machine translation. Yet when I try to search for a free alternative, it doesn't exist. Instead, I had created my own way to translate subtitles for personal usage in Python and now turned it into a website that runs without a server progressing your requests. All of it is by making direct requests to Google Gemini services, by making using of the free API they provide (all you need is a Google account).
The website I've created is at: https://quicktool.org/
Read the privacy policy as well to understand how it works, and even monitor the requests yourself: https://quicktool.org/privacy
As you may know, Google Gemini provides a free API that doesn't require you to enter any personal details. If it reaches the daily limit, then you can re-use it again after 24 hours. The limit is around 6 million tokens (according to forums, Google doesn't specify it). Translating a subtitle file of 2 hours is about 200k tokens, meaning you can translate up to ~20/30 subtitle files.
https://ai.opensubtitles.com/ would charge you ~$20 for that for example when it can be for free. That's also the main reason why I created the site.
I plan to upgrade further with more options like:
Modifying the prompt: The prompt is optimized to translate and let my code extract it well to create a SRT file. But it could be that you want some modification. For example, you may want a name the prompt reads to be translated differently. By editing the prompt, then you can get more accurate results.
Batch translate multiple languages: You can upload max 5 files at the same time, but it could be that you want one file to generate subtitles for multiple languages.
I hope to create these features soon, feel free to try out now!

Nice work.
I use SubtitleEdit to translate (Based on Google also ) and it does a good job. What is the advantages of using your tool? -
Thanks for the great initiative. In your experience, does the AI understand the context of the movie based on the uploaded subtitles to make the translation more relevant and accurate?
Please also add Indonesian language. -
The AI understands whether lines are connected or not. For instance, if a subtitle line looks like
1
00:00:49,880 --> 00:00:53,420
Your voluntary participation to join
2
00:00:53,630 --> 00:00:55,590
the Long Walk has been...
3
00:00:55,880 --> 00:01:00,300
accepted via lottery.
The AI knows that those three lines form a connecting sentence. I have also noticed that the pattern of the subtitles changes based on the language being translated into. If a language has an SOV (Subject Object Verb) structure and you translate into a language with a different grammatical format, the text order is completely rewritten to match the style.Last edited by quicktool.org; 13th Sep 2025 at 08:36.
