  3. all I use is dvdshrink, and if all that you are retaining is the movie itself, you should almost always end up with results that are extremely hard to tell from the original, if not a 1 to 1 copy. Use deep analysis in dvdshrink if you are going to need to transcode (shrink) the video at all. It will improve your results. If you want to retain the whole disc, I usually use large amounts of compression, if not stills, on certain parts of the discs, while keeping the compression level of the main movie as slight as possible. Also, by all means remove the stupid french and spanish, etc. audio tracks on movies that contain them - unless, of course, you actually think you're going to use them.

  4. Yeah, I agree. I've used nothing but dvdshrink, and I have a hard time finding any differences between it and the original. I only use the movie, use only one audio track(dolby 5.1), and only use Eng subs. I also use deep analysis, since I am trying to get a quality copy. Now, since it is compressed, I know that it can't be "perfect", but I don't want to split the movie in half, to two DVD-Rs, either. And dl media is still too high for me to gamble on a coaster or seven. So, until the price comes down, I'll just stick with Old Faithful.

perfect 1 to 1 would mean you using dual layer media. other than that there is no such thing as a "perfect" 1 to 1 if it involves compressing video.

If you're going from DVD9 to DVD5, and if even after eliminating menus and extras (i.e. movie-only) the size of the resulting files is still larger than a DVD5 will hold, DVDShrink, et al. will have to transcode to make them fit. In other words, "perfect" doesn't exist unless the files will fit without transcoding (which is rare these days).

If you want "perfect," you're going to have to (A) split the movie onto two DVDs (which, IMHO, negates one of DVD's big advantages, but I digress), or (B) copy the DVD onto a dual-layer blank DVD. If neither option is acceptable, then I think you're going to have to live with less than perfect, as you can't squeeze a gallon of water into a quart container and not spill a single drop.

A couple of people missed this part of the OP I think ...

As stated, DL is the only true 1:1 copy 100% of the time for DVD-9. Given you are prepared to use 2 DVD-5s, there are a couple of ways you can go about it:

    1. Main movie only on 1 disc.
    2. Main movie only on 1, menus and extras on the other.
    3. Split main movie only over two discs, menus and extras on the third.

Option 1 is the one I generally use. In general I find that I only watch the extras once or twice whereas I can watch some movies 10-20 times. The conundrum comes when the main movie with only the bare essentials in terms of subtitles and audio still will not fit on 1 DVD-5. It is at this point that you must make the decision whether to use option 2 or 3 from above.

I have found IFOEdit to be as good as any for splitting a title over 2 DVDs with absolutely no modification to the video itself. All you need to do is specify two separate directories, select the chapter where you want the split to occur and it'll do the rest for you.

The other thing I have found over time is that I have a couple of DVDs where movie only is well below 4.37GB, but the output is only just noticably blurry in certain spots on certain movies. I think it might be the way my player plays burnt discs as opposed to pressed discs, but I don't know for sure.
    If in doubt, Google it.
