I've been struggling with a ffmpegX for a while and have yet to successfully encode a DVD to an avi file. All below refers to mencoder avi settings.
1) when trying to encode from a DVD folder produced by either MacTheRipper or a DVDBackup I would end up with a silent avi and an error in a log saying there was no sound in a file. DVD folder produced by 0SEx 0.0110a1 on the other hand behaved fine but was not recognizable by Handbrake. That led me to believe the methods of extracting VOBs from DVD are not always compatible with ffmpegX. I ended up using single VOBs for most of my experiments.
2) the progress window, when resized, would cut off the right end of any progress along with the percentage information about the progress.
3)Every now and then extracted subtitles would end up being black: unreadable in MPlayerX and impossible to convert to srt format with a subrip (but maybe I just couldn't set the correct colors in that app)
4)When I tried to split an avi to two files ffmpegx would give me two files with no sound
5)also, is there a way of splitting subtitles into two files as well?
6) I haven't been able to encode a proper 700MB sized file yet; most of the time they end up being much smaller then initially calculated; by 70-80 MB.

1) Check with the Play button if the sound is playing before encoding. If it is not playing, change the Audio track number in the Audio tab until you hear it.
2) Bug to be fixed, in to-do list.
3) You should open the IFO palette.
4) Send details or link to sample file in order to reproduce the issue.
5) You can split .srt subtitles with SubSyncX
6) If there is not enough complexity in the movie, the bitrate may drop.

What is IFO palette? I don't think it gets extracted from a DVD if I'm using single VOB. And what can I do with it if I find it and get it open?Originally Posted by major
Could two and three pass encoding increase the allocated bitrate instead of dropping the final size of the file?Originally Posted by major
And will they sync to the split avi (provided I get the sound issue right)?Originally Posted by major

The color information to be used for the subtitles, stored in the VTS_01_0.IFO file. Copy this file from a DVD and open it in "Sub palette".Originally Posted by visitor13
It could help, provided that the bitrate value is realistically choosen.Originally Posted by visitor13
SubSyncX can also sync the subtitles.Originally Posted by visitor13
