  1. It may be true about most things but dvd media is not 1 of them..i've had $1.50 Sony's,Verbatims,Maxells, HP's and Memorex's mess up more than my $0.37 prodiscs ever have...you take your chances with ANY brand but lately my prodiscs have been bulletproof..even though i am an advocate of Prodiscs,i know eventually that they will start makin crappy disks to save $$ and i will need to find a different brand. If any disagrees with me please post.
    $$$$ doesn't always = quality
been doin this since i had a Pioneer A03..so i sorta kinda know a little more of nothing than some

I think you will be able to find exceptions. As you say, once they find out they can contract with CMC and save a bunch, they'll start turning out crap too. It seems all the bargain brands do eventually.

But I'd sooner trust a quality media (read Apple, Pioneer, Taiyo Yuden, Maxell ...several various Japan-made DVDs) and pay a little extra. And lately you can get even "the good stuff" for fairly cheap. You know they're not going to all of a sudden develop dye issues and leave you with 30 coasters in that spindle. That's happened to me many times.

Call me lucky, but I've had good luck with just about all types of media. I have backups over two years old done with the early versions of Shrink / Nero on unbranded Princos, Comp USA crap brand that still play well on all my machines as well as with TY / Maxell / Verbatin / Ritek / Prodisk and others. The only time I;ve ever had bad unplayable burns was when I tried some Optodisks 4x printables. They would crap out when burned at 4x but were good at 2x

Price is not a determination for media. Never really was, not for long anyway.
