I have several movies in avi format, which I then converted to 352 x 240 mpegs, and I burned a small segment of one onto a vcd using Easy CD Creator 5.0 Plat, and it works great on my Apex DVD player. however I can't burn the whole movie to a vcd because the mpeg is 1.2 Gigs! Why is it that I can buy a vcd online which has the entire movie (120 + minutes) on one cd? How can I get my movies to fit on a cd? I made the mpeg using TMPGEnc

  2. those things they sell with the whole movie on one disc is called a DVD. a VCD can not hold 120 minutes of video.

you can make your own XVCD if you have a player that supports this but i have not seen XVCD's sold commercially.

anyway check this out, its a worthwhile tread that might shed some light on things for you.

  3. As what duwaldo said.

Most VCDs sold have the movie over two discs. For a standard VCD, one minute of video approximately equals 10 MB. You can roughly fit 740 MB on a 74min CD and 800 MB on an 80min CD for a VCD.

DVDs are not a "CD" based medium. Your average dual-layered DVD will have a capacity of over 10 times that of a CD.

  4. The AVI you have downloaded is called DIVX (IT's not really the same as an AVI that you capture, which of course is really huge). DIVX is encoded at mpg4 (more or less), and you are re-encoding it to mpg1. That's why your mpgs are so big. DIVX discs are only playable on the computer, however, It will fit that amount of movie on a disc.

shame on you vitualis for trusting dumwaldo's inaccurate assessment

    excuse me????

i think you need to re read this.

the poster asked 2 questions and i directly answered both questions.

i explained why you cant buy a VCD with an entire 120 minute movie however it is possible to home author VCD's of this type in some cases.

i then offered a link to something else that i posted that EXTENSIVLEY covers the process of converting downloaded divx movies to VCD format.

you however came in and offered a completely inacurate reply even to the question in the topic. FYI the reason him mpegs are so big is because the DivX has a bitrate around 600 kb/s and the VCD has a bitrate of 1150 kb/s. but thanks for offering me a chanch to post a follow up that also answers the question in the topic. shame on you for advertising your ignorance. maybe one day i will explain compression to you but not today.

next time try reading the actual post and not just the topic.
