  1. Hello!

I have .avi movie, and .srt subtitles.
How to add permanent subtitles to .avi without changing the movie quality, and that the file will still be less than 800 MB, and still an .avi format?!?
    Which program to use?!?
And I will be very glad if someone could explain it to me, and for other people.

    Thank you!

The most widely method used - and suggested - is to use VirtualDUB with the add-on filter called VOSUB, which permanently burns subpictures on the video.

Caution: once burnt over the video they cannot be realistically removed. They form part of the video content.

Your second question regarding keeping the video size is a bit tricky.

In order to add the subtitles, VitualDUB must decompress the source AVI, convert the subpictures into images and overlay them over the video. Finally, the decompressed video must be converted back to AVI using a suitable - perhaps the same as the original - codec.

Keeping the same size and quality is tricky, unless you know exactly how the original AVI was encoded. This whole process will certainly degrade the overall quality, but careful encoding may keep the degradation hardly visible.

Opening the AVI with VitualDUB, under the File --> File Information menu, you can see the original files codec, average bitrate and frequency of keyframes. These are some hints for you to configure the recompression.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
