  1. Anybody here watch their weight or trying to loose some. I've been all over the internet trying to find out how to reduce my calories but can't seem to find a calorie counter that works. Anybody here know of a good way to figure out how much you are suppose to take in in a day (An equation like height + weight x 12 = amounth of calories per day) I don't know...science isn't my strong suit!?

  2. Anyone trying to lose weight?

    Yeah, me.

My doc put me on a low-fat diet and took most of my soda away. I'm allowed no more than 15 grams of fat and 3 grams of saturated fat. I can have one caffeine-free diet Coke per day. I also have to drink at least 12 glasses of water each day and eat at least four pieces of fruit between meals.

I thought I would die for sure.

Monday will be my 30th day on the diet. I've already lost 18 pounds. He expects me to lose another 36 pounds before Thanksgiving.

I put no research into this diet at all. I figured I'd give him 30 days and see if there were any results. The only exercise he recommended was walking four times a week.

I don't think calories are quite as important as other factors. I have no idea, but I would guess I'm getting about 1200-1500 calories per day. I was told to only pay attention to the fat content.

    It's working. Well.

That' pretty good, Indo. But 12 glasses of water? I tried 8 but I got tired of going to the bathroom every five minutes.

  4. I am trying to gain loose excess body fat, which also means I will loose lean muscle too. Just trying to figure out the perfect intake of calories. I know that fat is just as important, no more that something like 12 percent of your daily intake should be fat.

I think the majority of the known free world is trying to lose weight. Except for me.
    Indo:
Congrats. 18 pounds is signifigant. Too bad you can'
substitute beers for the water, like I do. At least running off to the potty becomes an adventure. A door jamb here, a stubbed toe there. Hiccup.
My lady, who is very heavy, has just gone on the Aitkin's diet. At the recommendation of her doctor, no less. Totally wierd. It flies in the face of logic.
Eliminate the carbs and go crazy with everything else. 20 grams of carbs a day.
Breakfast = a pound of bacon and 3 eggs= 1.5 grams of carbs. 18.5 left for the rest of the day.
    Beavereater:
Do a search for body mass index. It will probably get you all the info you need.

Atkins is cool, but it gets boring. It seems great for the first few days, but then you realize you're eating the exact same thing every day.

If you stay with it, it works fast. but you can't go back to your normal diet after you're done or you'll gain even more.

Wish you all good luck. Diets are much easier with support from loved ones.

  7. I've read just a little about Atkins...not sure if its really the way to go for diets. I mean, if you get a balance of the good things in life (veggies, fish, fruits and water) and the stuff you crave (burgers, burgers...and burgers) as long as its in moderation along with exercise, you can loose weight and hit your good weight.

    Beavereater:
I have always believed in the calories in versus calories out formula. Some research into the low carb diet shows that it suppresses the production of ketone protiens. These protiens are necessary for fat to bind to the receptors. Ergo, you shed the fat.
    Gizmo:
I am foody and considered by many to be a gourmet cook. My research into the low carb diet shows me that it dosen,t have to be boring at all. When first intoduced in the 70's, there wasn,t any support for it. NOW, everywhere you look and everwhere you go, there are scads of low carb offerings. I have developed low carb pizza (a necessity), a mashed potato and gravy substitute and a burger. A substitute fried rice and french fries are next on my hit list.
BUT, at the end of the day, best of luck on whatever you do to bring your weight into line.

I'm watching my sugar intake - my weight has never been a problem no matter how much or what I ate.

Carbs will turn to sugar...so pasta and bread can turn deadly if not careful.

I think the cravings are more psychological than physical...unless you're a
diabetic (which results to lack of energy 'cause the food isn't going where is should be going and you think you're starved even if you just had a big meal)

Eat less sweets, white breads and chips.

Eat more veggies (daily variety - the more colors the better), but cut down on potatoes (they are high in carbs)

Drinking more will help curve your hunger

I believe this is true if you ae thinking carbs as opposed to calories...
Veggies can be a double edged sword as things like corn are high in sugars = carbs = fat....

  11. @kiki, Thanks!

Drinking that much water isn't actually so bad. For starters, it's still ******* hot here in Arizona, so I need the extra fluids anyway. And after awhile, your body adjusts to it.

Drinking water DOES curb your hunger. THAT surprised me, but it's true.

    @beavereater,

A couple of places come to mind: webmd.com and usda.gov. Those might be good places to look as well.

This gives you a calculator to work it out,
somewhere along the lines of body weight x 24 = daily calorie intake but you also have to take your body fat percentage into account.
    It's all there

I think you answered your own question right here Beavereater. I get plenty of exercise my job takes care of that. I can eat whatever I want and I do, I get a lot of exercise and stay about the same weight. Not that that is going to work for everyone. Moderation if needed, variety and getting out from behind a desk once in a while is the key.

I beg to differ. "Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution" was a runaway best-seller in the '70s. There was a run on Ketostix at every drug store so people could measure their body's state of ketosis with a daily urine test. "Purple is good" Everyone was fascinated that they could eat butter ...but not cheese

  15. I propose a test...we all drink JUST beer for a week. See who looses and gains the most weight.

    Anybody keen on that!?

Very true. But then, a gourmet cook probably wouldn't find many diets of any kind to be very boring. I, myself, am anything but a gourmet cook, but I can fool a lot of people when I'm in front of the grill.

At any rate, I'm not at all overweight. I should probably gain a few lbs. I tried the Atkins diet (as well as other diets) for a month just to see what it was like. But honetly, I simply don't have the same motivation that many others do, so my boredom with the diet is only my opinion.

I should also add - of all the diets I've experimented with, I enjoyed the Atkins the most.

    Lose weight what for?

To be honest, if I can't eat what I want, then **** it, I'll want to be checking out soon anyway...now if you'll excuse me I have 1 lb of bacon, 6 eggs, and some gravy and biscuits waiting on me.

Probably close to 5000 calories, something like 7 million grams of carbs...don't care.

..and Oh yea...I made the gravy from the bacon grease.

Color me there for the GREAT beer test.
    Gizmo:
I hear ya. I too, good use a few pounds.
My normal diet is damn near atkins anyways.
I have never been a starch or sugar fan.
    Northcat:
You GO boy. Eat, drink and be merry. There are those, however, who fear a premature death caused by over weight complications. Gravy made from bacon or sausage drippings ROCKS.
Best of luck to all that are trying to lose a few.
