I downloaded some subtitles ("The hunt for red october 1990 dvdrip xvid-fyjs cd1.sub") which I can't find out the format of. The file is binary and about 9 MB for one hour movie.
Any ideas on how to read the file???
Or is it just fake?

The subtitle format is not fake. The .sub format is a very commonly used format for subtitles. You may use Subtitle Workshop (freeware) to open the file and read the subtitles.
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.
