  1. I’m a newbie in this so I only have this simple question:

Which of this codec’s is better Divx or Xvid? And why?

So if anybody can help me, I would really appreciate.

    Thanks,

    Alejandro

    Hello,

I use divx whenever I convert to avi. I haven't used xvid so I can't say. I would imagine there would be almost no difference since xvid is a derivative of divx.

  3. Xvid is a dirivitive of Dvix as Mercedes is a dirivitive of Chrysler...

Personally I believe Xvid is better, Check Doom9's latest codec compairision, check the Divx forum on Doom9 (spicifically about the reviews to the new Divx 5.2), more importantly encode with both and decide for yourself which you prefer.

FWIW, I believe both look better when played back with ffDshow.

    Hello,

I thought xvid was a reconstruction of divx? That was why it was called xvid - divx backwards. I guess I simplified xvids history too much. Oh well.

  5. I believe (don't quote me) one of the guys that originally helped develop Divx left and started Xvid "in his free time". Although there are very many people that work on Xvid as it is open source. Other than that Xvid and Divx are different (of course not too different as they are both ISO MPEG4 compatable)

You are right that Xvid's name came from Divx backwards. See Link.

  6. xvid is better compresion
but divx files are more likely to work in standalone dvd players with divx support

  8. Xvid is just as compatable with standalone players if you don't use some of their "advanced" settings. Like multiple B frames or custom matrixes.
