    Hi,

    I have captured in 3ccd cams, edited in Media Studio 7 as PAL 720x576 DV Encoder 1, DVD Audio 48.

    I have edited and now want the best video quality I can get.

    1. What size and other rates should I set in Create Video in MS7 for an avi file?

    2. What rates should I set for the best quality DVD burn.

    3. What rates for a good quality Web stream file such as Real or QuickT

    It is to be given to a TV station to take clips of to use in an ad they are making.

    Any help appreciated.

    Hi,

    It is a 30 sec ad but they will just use small clips to make this up. I am giving them 3 x 2 min clips in DVD and avi form.

    Thanks

    normally stations want Beta SP or D-Beta .. beta sp is still the most common ..

    never DVD (very very rare) ...

    if on a disk .. DVCAM at the least or quicktime non compressed or targa compressed ..

    not to many stations want avi's due to incompatabilities .. some will take avid compliant avi or DV as i mentioned ...

    it would be no better than the quality of the dvd -- but it does make it easier for them to edit it ...

    stations would like things like LTC , bars , tone , title card , proper case marking (NDF or DF, 0 or 7.5IRE, length) --- but don't always get it of course ...

    betaSP would certainly be more professional delivery , even if from a dvd source ...

    LTC = time code
    bars = smpte color bars that are produced by the same equipment that produced the clip
    tone = 1 khz sine wave at 0dB as indicated on the beta sp meters (runs with bars with timecode preroll - ususally 10-55secs as leader then 5 sec - 10 sec black , then program starting at 00:00:00:00
    NDF or DF = drop frame or non drop frame
    IRE = black levels
    lenth = TRL (tape run lenth) and program run lenth

    and program start = if NOT start at 00:00:00:00

    00:00:00:00 should equal first modulation of sound or first picture (if non film based it is first picture)

    all of the above is real standard and any production company would know what it all means ..

    if a bunch of clips -- it is a nice touch to list where each starts on timecode readout , because i hate wasting time searching all over the tape ..

    Thanks for your advise..

    Do I lose any quality by transferring the avi clips from my HD via MS7 'Send to Tape' to a mini DV tape.

    Then I can get a transfer done to Beta SP without the DVD process.

    If not, what is the b st way to get from the HD to Beta SP. (I don't have a Beta SP recorder, only SVHS).

    Thanks

    you can go the minidv to betasp route .. or just make a uncompressed qt file and burn it on a dvd disk as data, but the print to DV is ok and easier (some compression loss but DV is pretty good)

  11. I would drop a 10sec slate in as well.
    Sandwich it in between the bars/tone and program roll...i.e., bars/tone followed by 10sec of black, followed by 10sec slate, followed by 10sec black then program roll at 00:00:00:00.
    That was the standard when I used to work for a post production house. We almost always had to reformat the headers as most of the stuff we received had non standard headers
    No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.

    Ah, thanks for the info BJ_M. I'm happy to say I actually know most of that stuff now that it was explained. All those shorts words and letters really threw me for a loop there.
