  1. I have an MSI VTD8X video card. It uses the NVidia GeForce 4 Ti4200 8X video chip. It also uses the Philips SAA7108AE video capture encoder/decoder chip.

I have a Samsung VCR with S-Video output (it's a Hi-Fi if that matters) and an older Canon 8mm (analog) camcorder with composite video output only. Both of these devices have analog (RCA l/r) audio output and I use a special RCA to 1/8 stereo cable that came with my digital still camera to get audio to my SoundBlaster Live! soundcard's input jack.

I use Nero VisionExpress2 to capture my video and then do whatever I want with it. I have a Lite-On DVD burner that works with whatever media I put in it.

Using Nero VisionExpress 2 to do the entire process from capture to burn, what are the best settings to use given things like the poor initial quality of the analog VHS and 8mm sources, the native resolution of the Philips capture chip (I don't know what it is, but here is the spec. sheet if anyone wants to tell me what all this stuff means - http://www.semiconductors.philips.com/pip/SAA7108AE_V1.html ), and the limitations of Nero VisionExpress 2?

I am open to using practically any method and possibly other software but I am sticking with the hardware I now have. I would prefer to use only Nero to do this process but like I said, other software that may work better will be considered (considering cost and ease of use, of course).

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

  2. Don't use NeroVision Express. That's the best advice I can give you; also, read the guides. There is no magic answer; that is what they are for.

  3. YES !!!!
Don`t use Nero Vision Express for capturing ...There are plenty programs better for capture. You must test them all, then choose one witch would give you the best quality. Pay attention to deinterlace because many capture softs don`t do deinterlace well...
    Bye!

  4. Regarding deinterlacing -- if I understand what you are saying (you want to generate DVDs from VHS and Hi-8 home videos) -- you shouldn't; it is only necessary when the video is to be seen on a computer in a format such as DIVX (software DVD players deinterlace in real-time).

Deinterlacing causes a loss of temporal resolution and vertical image resolution, so is best avoided if at all possible.
