what is the most compatible audio format i should apply to my authored dvd's that will play on most stand alone dvd players?
what is the least supported?

AC3 audio from a Dolby-certified encoder tops my list for compatibility. Great size/quality tradeoff
You also have PCM / Wav, but obviously it takes up a lot more space
Lastly you have Mpeg I Layer II audio, for which dvd player support is questionable across North America, it's more widely supported in Europe
