Any tips on how to convert .asf format to a Mac compatible format that can be viewed and edited in imovie??

Your major hurdle will be finding apps for a Mac to perform the conversions, plus you will need to know which formats are supported by inmovie. Have you checked the HOW TO: Convert section? Just enter asf > X (X = whichever format is supported by inmovie).
