Whats the point of even using them yet? Compatability is a huge issue still and the price is outrageous. Even if you wanted it for data backup its much cheaper to use 2 single layer DVD discs and more reliable also

This is a valid point but some of us with capture cards are looking forward to backing up tapes at higher bit rates. I'll like putting a 8 gig mpg onto a dvd without compresing! (when the prices come down and compatibility goes up

I've already tired it and compatability was excellent according to my DVD players. All 6 of my players had no problems with playback.
However, I agree with you on the price, it's ridiculous.

I remember when DVD-R was around $10 each, and that was only 12 or so months ago. Hopefully they dual layer discs will follow suit.

Where did you do your shopping? 2 years ago when I got my first 1x DVD burner the discs were only $1.05 each.

As recently as a year and a half ago, they were about $3 each if you bought them in cases, or $2.25-$2.50 on a spindle.

And that was EVERYWHERE. Nobody sold them for anything approaching $1 until last summer.

hmmm....I still have my receipt from the summer before last that says I purchased two spindles of 100 discs each and the total was $210 without tax. that works out to $1.05 each in my book. hehe. maybe they made a mistake when they sold them to me so cheaply

I'd guess that the first use is by DVD production houses. Now they can demo their new DVD9 discs in their full splendor before sending them to be pressed. Some folks may even use them as disc masters to take to the pressing house rather than using DLT tapes.

As for the hordes of idiot pirates... I remember people talking about copying movies when blanks still cost $20.

Still, the biggest initial market will be people will a professional need, and enthusiasts who want to make better home videos or something. Thank these early adopters; they're the ones who make it affordable for everyone else a short time later.
