Menus are so confusing to those who have never used them. So I will ask a few short questions here and please help me out! (and tell me where my assumptions are incorrect) Using marty's guide and example, I have assumed the following:

1- upon insertion of the VCD into the DVD player, track one is the FIRST menu, and track 2 is the SECOND menu (ie chapter select menu)

2- In the FIRST menu, what happens if you press 3 or above? Will it jump to a chapter in the movie, or will it do nothing?

3- once playing the movie, is the FIRST CHAPTER is now track ONE instead of the FIRST MENU? How do you get back to the menu in this case?

4- nowhere can I find what happens when I need more than 9 tracks. Can you have more than 9 tracks? On most DVD players, when you're playing a VCD and you press a number, do you have to press a confirmation button as well, like "enter"? I suppose this would mean you could have 99 tracks, doesn't it? So is this how it works?

I'm sorry for the basic nature of my questions. I'm just having a really hard time visualizing how these things work!

    Thanks for your help!

  3. I'll give it a shot. I haven't burned movies with menus, but many music videos. To answer your questions in order:

  4. Sorry about that, bumped the send button.
    1. When I use NERO, Track 1 IS the first menu, but on mine, if the first menu goes from 1-10, then the second menu would be 11.
    2. If you press 3, 4, etc. it will correspond to the number on the menu. For instance, if I select 1 and play, it will play the first video I have burned, even though it is track 2 or 3.
    3. To return to the menu, just hit stop on your DVD player.
    4. Yes, 99 tracks is possible with small enough files. Never done it though. Only like 25 was my most.

  5. The problem is that you are thinking in "tracks". This isn't really the most appropriate concept in this case.

You can have up to 99 physical tracks on a CD and subsequently, you can have up to 98 video tracks (or sequences) on a VCD.

The user interaction on a VCD comprises of the "next", "prev", "default" and "return" buttons. There are also the numerical key presses. The numbers that can be used are "1" through to "99".

A the menu system works on a VCD depends completely on how you author the VCD.

For example, from the main menu, I can author that pressing "1" or "default" starts playing "chapter1" and pressing "2" goes to a "scene select" menu.

Once the main movie is playing pressing the numerical buttons can go to that specific chapter. I can author so that pressing "return" goes back to the "main menu".

How it works it completely up to you.
