  2. If you know the framerate of the ASF you can open it with AviSynth using the DirectShowSource("c:\filename.asf",FPS) function, maybe. If not, try Media Blaze Pro, a bad mpeg encoder but it worked well with WMV for me.

  4. this file is an avi. stangely, when i chekhed with gspot it says that the file is an asf. all of the other things are n.a.

thats why i believe that this is really an asf file but only with an avi extension instead.

i tried asftools but it didnt help. the thing is, it doesnt recognise the file as an asf file even though gspot says that it is. perhaps it is because it has an avi extension

i opened with virtualdub and an error message comes and says:

"not supported. microsoft owns US patent #6,041,345 on the asf file format, preventing third party applications from extracting data from asf files. asf file format support was removed as of v1.3d at the request of microsoft and to avoid patent infringement claims, and as such virtualdub no longer supports asf..."

so it really is an asf. so what is the possible way to convert it now into a mpg file?

I'm not sure if there's a free trial available but Canopus Procoder has worked for me in the past.
