  1. I am trying to convert some .avi-files to VCD, but itīs going very well with the latest version of ffmpegx(h). Iīve done this several times before, but itīs not working anymore.

Hereīs the message I get when I start encoding:

Encoding started on Sun May 16 16:52:56 CEST 2004
    cannot connect to jack server
cannot connect to default JACK server
    Input #0, yuv4mpegpipe, from 'pipe:':
    Duration: N/A, bitrate: N/A
    Stream #0.0: Video: rawvideo, yuv420p, 352x240, 29.97 fps
    Output #0, rawvideo, to '/Volumes/Data/.mpv':
    Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg1video, 352x240, 29.97 fps, q=2-15, 1150 kb/s
    Stream mapping:
    Stream #0.0 -> #0.0

    ....

    Whatīs going on?

Seems like you didn't give a valid name for the output file.

  3. I did name it right, but something very strange is going on with the naming. I just gave the output file the default name "movie" - but in the transcript (see below) it ends up being called "m.mpv"...

...so I donīt think the naming itself is the problem.

ffmpegx starts outputting to the file "m.mpv", but when I try to preview it I just get a black square.

Iīve also tried re-installing both ffmpegx and the engines files, and Iīve tried several different .avi-files - but nothing works.

    Iīm lost...

  4. ...one more thing: I cancelled the processing of the "m.mpv"-file after about 25% was completed. The resulting file is 1.6MB, though claiming to contain 35 minutes of video (I used the default VCD-preset)...that canīt be right?

Is there any way I can get hold of older versions of ffmpegx?

And what does that "jack server"-thing mean?

    Thanks for your help!

  5. Something seem wrong in your OSX install. Try "VCD" preset instead of "fast VCD".

http://www.jackosx.com/about.html, but it is not installed by ffmpegX.

  6. But why is ffmpegx calling upon the jack server?

    Or is it?

...and why arenīt my VCDs being encoded properly (as you can see from the transcript, ffmpegx canīt find either duration or bitrate from the input file etc.)?

    Hope you can help.

    It is not.

    That warning is harmless.

I would suggest to start a fresh OSX in another disk and install ffmpegX there. Then open your AVI file and choose VCD preset, hit encode, and wait for completion.
