Interlace or De-interlace

Is there some program that can tell if an avi file is interlaced or not.
I have downloaded a couple of .avi files (sporting events captured from TV). Now I want to use tmpgenc to convert them into either VCD or DVD half-D1.

If I have a non-interlaced avi file I should set the source to non-intelaced and the output to interlaced and then tmpgenc will create an interlaced mpeg (asuming I want to burn a DVD or VCD to watch on my TV set). In short I set source to what it the original avi is and output to interlaced or non interlaced depending on wether I want to watch it on PC or TV, correct?

I use Canopus Procoder....

did you try any of free software....virtualdub, or tmpgenc ?? don't know for sure because don't use them.

I don't think there's anything that can determine if an avi is interlaced. It's pretty easy to tell though, at least on a computer monitor. You will see a pretty bad combing effect when the video plays. Particularly during fast motion scenes.

Suppose my avi is non-intelaced. If I then choose to keep it that way by using non-interlace setting at booth the source option and ouput setting in tmpgenc, will it then be unwatchable on a TV?

No, avis will be mainly progressive rather than interlaced, if it is interlaced encode as such if not then encode as progressive, either will work fine on your TV. If you watch the avi on your PC look out for horizontal lines on the video which will indicate interlaced material (your monitor is a progressive display not interlaced).
