the one on sale that's compliant with your local provider
Can anyone recommend a good cable modem under $100?

Toshiba and Motorola seem to be highly regarded. I would check with your ISP to make sure what their requirments are. Odds are DocSIS II and maybe a few others standards.
I would tend to echo what 808 said -- as I'm sure he meant if possible purchase elsewhere, the make and model your cable provider is currently offering. Mine is a Motorola unit -- same as they wanted to lease me.
aahhh, any modem will really work... im still usin the same cheap one from 2 years ago. speeds are really dependent on the cable companys systems not the modem
All good answers but when I first got Roadrunner (have since switched) I went through two 3Comm modems before getting a Toshiba that worked for a couple years. Both repeatedly had "hangups" and had to be rebooted every couple of days. Finally got a Scientific Atlantic and haven't rebooted since (well, not because I had too).aahhh, any modem will really work... im still usin the same cheap one from 2 years ago. speeds are really dependent on the cable companys systems not the modem
There is something to be said for getting a modem brand that your provider recommends. If you don't, first time you call with a problem that's what they will blame.
