  1. I used MacTheRipper to rip the Matrix Revolutions DVD. MTR detected RCE, so I set the RCE region to 1. I also set the region coding for all regions. I proceeded to rip the DVD, and everything seemed fine. Then I proceeded to run it through DVD2one (in full disk copy mode), with the target size being set to DVDR of course.

Now here's the kicker... When the compression was done, the resulting Video_TS folder was 3.3 gigs, instead of 4.4 gigs! It actually compressed it too much, resulting in a considerable (and obvious) loss of quality. I tried the entire process from scratch all over again, and the same thing happened. At this point, i'm sort of baffled. I had no problems with the first 2 installments of the Matrix, but something is going on with the last movie.

As a side note, the first 2 movies didn't have any RCE, while Matrix Revolutions did (i don't know if that has anything to do with this).

Additionally, I did notice that Revolutions has bonus interactive material (for the computer) whereas I don't recall the others having it.

As an experiment, I'm going to try to rip the DVD in "EXTRACT MAIN FEATURE" mode, and see if it makes a difference. At this point I guess I'll try changing any factors that I can think of that might produce a different result.

  2. I should've checked this first.

Anyway, this forum sheds some light on the subject.

  3. Ok, there is definitely something fishy going on with The Matrix Revolutions.

It has already been established that DVD2one is over-compressing it (apparently there is no good explanation as to why this occurs with certain titles). So now I tried to use DVDremaster instead, and that program produces a flawed result as well. Only, this time the problem is different. When I tried to open the compressed VIDEO_TS folder in my Mac's DVD player, I got the little "Warner Brothers opener" then the "rated R" screen. The video then locked up and would not get past the "rated R" screen, but the audio would move forward and play as normal. Trying to jump forward in chapters would yield the audio for that chapter, but still showed only the "rated R" screen.

I went through the entire rip/compress process again, with the exact same result.

By the way, the ripped files have no problem until after they get compressed for burning.

    Any ideas, anyone?

  5. Uhh...what does the RIAA have to do with movies?
Look, let me explain something. I'm not Mr. Lebowski; you're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. That, or Duder. His Dudeness. Or El Duderino, if, you know, you're not into the whole brevity thing--

FWIW, I ripped this recently with 0sex and used dvd2onex on it without any problems. I didn't try MTR. Final size was 4.37 gigs.

BTW it was the PAL region 2 version.

    Cheers!

  7. Nexus, I have no idea what you're talking about. What exactly are you suggesting?

Anyway, I do own the movie, but I want to make a backup copy. The only way I have been able to do so, is with DVD2oneX in "movie only" mode. So far, all evidence points to the problem lying in the compression process, not the ripping process.

And Thoughton, I am using the Region 1 (NTSC) version of Matrix Revolutions, so you and I are dealing with entirely different discs but thanks for your well-intentioned input anyway.

Have you tried ANY other rippers aside from MTR?

I would still suggest you try 0sex anyway, if you haven't already. I realise it isn't very popular anymore, but in my experience it can rip anything - although sometimes you have to resort to disk image mode

It wont remove RCE or macrovision, but for the vast majority of people neither of those matter very much.

My main gripe with it is how it eats up CPU cycles once the rip has finished.

    Anyway, just my 2c.

PS As you can probably tell from my post, I think your problem is with your rip, not with dvd2one.

If its possible, i suggest returning the dvd. I just bought it and it copies over fine for me!

perhaps its a small flaw in the disk you got?!

if you can return and exchange

  10. Exchanging it is no longer an option for me, since I already wrote my name on the disc with a CD marker (tired of missing DVDs). Maybe I'll rent it and see if I have better luck.

As a side note, I have read on other forums that other people are also having issues with this disc. Who knows, maybe there was a little flaw in one of the batches that went out. I got mine on the release date at Walmart (only $15.99)

  11. I too was having problems...

I ran the master dvd thru MacTheRipper and then thru DVD2oneX.

After reading this forum I learned that you can launch DVD Player and play a TS_Video folder (this saved me from wasting some DVD-r's! - Thanks guys!!)

Strange problem... The video would "pulse" from normal to pixelated - every 15 seconds or so. At first I thought it might be some new fangled protection, but I persisted...
I noticed that I was using DVD2One v.1.2.1 so I updated to 1.3 and tried it again. Same results.

I Then ran the TS_Video folder from MacTheRipper and it was fine, so I knew the problem had to have been during the DVD2One step.

Then I tried running it thru DVD2One once more, this time changing the "Ratio" setting from "Variable" (New Enginge) to "Constant" (Old Engine?) and that did the trick - I then burned it and am a happy camper now.

Was strange though how when de-compressed this movie weighs in at the usual 6.47Gigs but after running thru DVD2One is shrinks to 3.16 Gigs even when target is set to 4472mb (Disk Copy).

I have been leaving the Ratio = Variable (until this Matrix incident) anybody stick with Constant? Anyone with problems using Variable?

    Cheers!
