A friend of mine was in Comp USA and wanted to buy X-copy and was told that they were pulling them off the shelves because they were illegal. Any truth to this?

I believe there was a ruling. But not to worry, it was a lousy piece of software anyways.

  3. Yes the maker of 321 DVD X Copy 321 Studios lost a lawsuite to the movie industriy and was required to stop selling the product.

There are still copies out there on the web if you want to buy some.

However, I own it and found it to not be a good program. There are other and better tools out there to backup your movies, for example clonedvd

As the above replies correctly mention, a recent court ruling ordered the makers of XCopy (321 software) to cease selling their program as it was. The only portion of the program which was a "no-no" was the actual "ripper." So, 321 has put together a new version of the product, in which the ripper itself has been removed.

321 software was given one week to comply, and they have. However, they also issued press releases in which they stated that they plan to appeal the ruling. So, for right now, versions of XCopy which have the "ripper" have been recalled.

Yes, it is easy to dismiss this all because one does not like the actual product anyway. However, the issues raised should be of some concern to all. If this ripper (the one in XCopy) was ruled illegal, then will your favorite be under attack next month? And, does it matter if the ripper is sold for a profit, or freely available as freeware? Did this case set a precedent which could cause all rippers to become illegal?

My understanding was that the judge's ruling was based on the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

Those who wish more info should do a search, as there have been threads on this forum. Also, you can find the actual judge's ruling, and also the company's own responses at their website.

  5. Yeh was a ruling of sorts...I have dvdxcopy, dvdxcopy xpress, and the new version platinum, and I think they are good software, never had any probs with any of them. platinum, the newest version is great, allows complete manipulation of the master dvd disc. You can still find the software on the net, kazaa, and just crack the registration code like i did!
