I went to burn my first DVD and TempGenc goes ballistic on me.

    TempGenc say:
    Estimate file size: 4550MB
    Exceeds 4.7 Gig by 4437MB
    BS!!
Actual file size, from Win XP, is 4580177KB, less than 4.7 Gig

I did this from the first screen of DVD Author. It did not want to make its special folder for burning saying the above. What's going on? Is this the old file size discrepancy thing, 1024 vs 1000

You have 2 ways to proceed: one complicated and one easier.

    1. The complicated is to reencode your video with a little bit lower bitrate (you can use bitrate calculator to know the filesize of the result).

    2. Recomended by me: ignore the error in TPMGEnc DVD Author and generate the files. After that use DVD Shrink and automatic shrink them in the size of DVD media.

About the size: actually 4.7GB media means 4700MB which is 4.38GB realistic size. This comes exact from 1024 not equal to 1000.

  3. Stas hit it on the head. Ignore the Author warning and create the dvd folders. Then use InterVideo DVD Copy (if you own it) or DVD shrink to shrink it. There is nothing wrong with your Author program. BTW, if you use Shrink, perform deep analysis. This option appears in a pullup after you hit "backup". The quality is much better with the second pass.

As for size, I believe it is the old 1000 vs 1024 issue. Don't worry, Author calculates correctly, although it appears to be cheating you.

LRD is right! I forgot about Deep Analysis. It gives much better results.

The only note is that in this case compression should be below 5% and deep analysis is not need (as I read in many posts). But, ... you should not loose if you make it
