Nero Recode 2 Surpasses 34 Million Downloads in First Nine Weeks!; Nero Digital Continues Its Success Story
KARLSBAD, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 2, 2004--Ahead Software, leaders in digital media technology, announced today that Nero Recode 2(TM), the latest addition to Nero 6(TM), its award-winning digital media software suite, has surpassed the 34-million download mark within nine weeks of its initial release. Nero Recode 2, which includes Nero Digital(TM), the world's fastest MPEG-4 video and audio codec, are part of December's free update of Nero 6.3 and are still available at no cost to Nero 6 retail users across the globe.
Nero Recode 2 is the first application to take full advantage of Nero Digital's power. In addition to its capabilities to re-author, copy and reduce MPEG-2 streams (DVD-9 to DVD-5), Nero Recode 2 can recode 'non-protected' DVD movies to Nero Digital, preserving chapters, sub-titles, multi-channel audio and above all else, quality - all at lightening speed. No other application today offers these features.
"Nero Digital is setting standards in audio and video compression technology, successfully combining speed with quality providing a complete home theater experience at a fraction of the space." says Charly Lippoth, Business and Product Development Manager of Ahead Software AG, "Nero Digital is compatible with set-top players and portable devices which will become the CE industry's most sought after digital video players in the near future."

How much space does Nero take up on the hard drive nowadays? I assume this is an "upgrade" these folks are downloading? I see Nero 6(?) in stores @ around 60 €...Do I need this version to download Recode 2?
DVDShrink is very small in size and it's free. I don't get it. -
The full Nero suite is more than just compression the - DVD authoring, audio editing, burnning (especially burning) image drive etc.
It's a fair bundle for $60 US (If you download).
Plus it has a better ASPI layer than you get from adaptec (impoertant if you're running XP) -
Is there any advantage to Nero Recode over DVD Shrink? I realize that they are essentially the exact same thing, but just wondered if Recode would be better because its a "professional" program whereas Shrink is freeware.

You're right on that one...XP and the older versions of Easy CD Creator do not play well together. Mine runs fine now but I recall needing to change my ASPI. I only use EZCD for my CD creations.Originally Posted by djelimon
There is an old version of Ahead Nero(?) on this computer but it is now useless because I've upgraded my burners....and I don't think Ahead Nero was ever meant to do DVD Burning..

How old? I (and plenty of others) use Nero 5.5 quite happily for DVD burning.Originally Posted by hech54

YESI (and plenty of others) use Nero 5.5 quite happily for DVD burning.
smooth,error-free dvdr burning with 5.5.10.42.

I haven't burned a coaster yet with Nero 6.whatever...
But otoh it won't burn just anything - it has to be a compliant DVD file. -
5.5.10.42 = best version ever ... i see no reason to change

I also had Nero 5.5.10.54, and it worked fine. But then I got Nero 6 (it was a gift), and now I won't go back. Besides plain CD/DVD burning, it has the DVD-9 to DVD-5 encoder (better than DVD2One, which I bought and have been using since version 1). And the backup program included that is perfect for my purposes. I don't use the DVD authoring program, I have other programs for that, and also I don't use the Mpeg4 encoder, because it's not compatible with my Kiss DVD player; if it wasn't for that, I have seen that you get better quality than with DivX or XviD at the same bitrates.

Have to agree, I tried v6 and I got burnt not the dvd+r5.5.10.42 = best version ever ... i see no reason to change
plus the gui is to fisher-price and slow for my liking (supose it matches XP tho)
Just out of intrest wonder how many ppl downloaded Dvdshrink? -
Can anyone please answer a query for me? I have Nero Ultra 6 fitted from delivery of computer from manufacturer. When i try to download nero 6 updates i get a message saying unlicensed copy detected and that i can buy a number on line, this is after entering my valid number. Do i still need to purchase something else?

Have already contacted nero and waiting answer, thought somebody might have had same problem

If "fitted from delivery of computer" means you never purchased nero directly then you have what is referred to as "OEM" software. Ahead/Nero, like most software vendors, will not upgrade you at the same price as direct purchasers (who would have paid more).Originally Posted by gilera
It looks like you get a $10 to $20 discount (probably the same amount nero got from your computer or drive manufacturer.)
