I just had to replace my DVD burner from an NEC 1300A USA 2 drive due to a burned out laser. I picked up a Sony DRX-530UL firewire / usb2 8x drive. All my previous media burns fine and at the rated speeds except for my cheapo stuff ( Princos 1x ) wich can be made to burn at 2x.

Has any one had enough experience yet to recommend some good relieable + media that will be compatible with this drive?

    Thanks

  2. My old roomie has the internal version of that drive. He burns the memorex 4x media that is ricoh at 8x with no problems. He bought the discs at best buy. I have heard that they make memorex +r that is cmc but have not seen any yet.

Don't forget with the new firmware that drive will be -r at 8x.

I would not trust Meritline to tell me the truth about anything.

The quality of the RICOH (JPN R01-002) blank media sold under the brand of TDK, Memorex, SONY and others is quite variable in quality. Sometimes you get good stuff and sometimes not so good. It will burn at 8x in some burners.

  7. Hey wassup all new here. I just bought the internal dru-530a and as well looking for good 8x media to get bang for my buck. I have found these dvd+r bought haven't heard anything about these.

    Ritek 8X 4.7GB DVD+R Media

whats the scoop on those. If I don't here that many good things I might just burn a 4x with memorex until quality 8x media is released.

    Let me know
    CD's that spin are cool.

  8. You must be very careful about buying RITEK 8x DVD+R media. Many US vendors are charging you for 8x certified media and sending you RICOH (made by RITEK) that are only certified for 4x. The vendors try to justify it because in many burners the RICOH 4x media will burn at 8x. The fact is that RITEK shipped a lot of product that was mislabeled and the US vendors know that but choose to sell it anyway.

I have found a source for true RITEK DVD+R 8x certified media [RITEK R03-002] media code. I am testing it and I will report. If the media code on your "8x" stuff is not the code inside brackets then you have been scammed. Most of the scam media is [JPNR01-002].

    Good Luck

  10. Have the Memorex DVD+R 4X from Amazon.

They burn at 8.1X on the Plextor. However, running the error test on DVDINFOPRO is showing a lot of read errors.

Not sure, if that means they are coasters or not. They play fine, but haven't watched the entire discs yet.

  11. Oops!!! Possible FALSE ALARM on my last post.

I was trying to read the DVD+R on a Samsung DVD (Computer) and just found out that it's only speced for DVD-R/DVD-ROM. The discs still play... heh...

I'll do data verification on all the discs on a dual format drive tonight and post again.

  12. part of the problem could be that you are using an external USB2.0 drive. I'd never trust USB for burning anything. Its just too unstable. Firewire is a different story though.

  13. Just tested all 12 of those Memorex DVD+R 4X from Amazon (Ricohj).

They all burned at 8.1X on my Plextor 708A and all passed the DVDINFOPRO read test successfully!

I bought a 50 disc spindle of Ritek 8X from Newegg for 65 bucks. The media ID is Ritek R03. I have burned 5 at 8X so far and they are perfect. DVDINFOPRO shows zero errors.

    Hope this helps

What burner did you use and the firmware? I have a stack of these R03 media, but they will not burn at 8x on my Plextor 708a with firmware 1.04. The Plextor downshifts to 3.9x after a few seconds of trying 7.9x.

I have a LiteOn 851a GSOC firmware that does not downshift and just aborts the burn at 19 percent where the Plextor downshifts.

    dlathem,

I am using a IOmagic, rebadged BTC IDE 1008, Firmware 0256.

Software I am using is DVD Shrink to rip to an iso, then DVD Decrypter at 8X to burn. The average on 8X is about 9 minutes to burn.

Usually, first stage of burning at 4X lasts about 3 minutes

Second stage at 6X burns for about the next 3 minutes

Last stage at 8X burns for about 2 minutes

So far I am up to 8 DVD's made with no coasters. I have one disc that did have a few white blocks testing read errors with DVDINFOPro, but plays perfect.

    Hope this helps!
