I'm into a huge task of converting my very large VHS library to DVD. I have purchased the video Clarifier from facetvideo.com, which is a macrovision disabler, but it doesn't work on all of my tapes.
I've checked out the hacks on Lordsmurf's guide page. The page says there are 3 hacks in the dowload but I'm only getting one, atimacro. The hack successfully downloaded and installed. When the program is up it maintains that macro is disabled but I still get copy guard when I try to copy certain tapes. Does anyone have any experience with this. Also, I couldn't find the particluar hack that Lordsmurf recommended, ati-mv-hack.zip. The only one I got was atimacro.
Any suggestions? Where can I download the other hacks?

Sorry to hear about your troubles, I have the same problem also.
My wallet wont stretch to buying the dvd versions (of those that are available). Here in the UK i've found it very difficult to find any TBC's for sale.
As a matter of interest, hasnt anybody ever lobbied and protested to ATI about the Macrovision in their drivers?
If ATI would listen what would their response be?
Is the inclusion of Macrovision a voluntary act or are they obliged by law?
Thanks,

The SIMA SCC has always worked for me in eliminating macrovision. It regenerates the vertical interval bar were macrovision resides. I'm not sure how the Facet works, but from looking at the picture on their website I suspect it's not the solution to eliminating macrovision. Is it battery powered? The SIMA SCC works on DVD as well as VHS transfers to VHS tape. It won't work on transfers to a standalone DVD recorder because they use digital copy protection as well.

is it then possible in saying that perhaps the videos are using the more rare (for vhs anyway) css protection, instead of regular macro type 1

The best way i have found is to get a CanopusAVDC100. Works everytime for me. Nyah Levi

yeah my older dazzle dvc2 card (pci ver) doesnt have any of the macro garbage in it either

yeah i also purchased an ati all in wonder pro 9000 and have noticed that the top quarter of the capture shakes and has a white line through it. The rest of the video goes dark, then light then dark. Weird thing is that these are home movies, not official movies that i'm trying to transfer to dvd. I bought a digital video stabilizer, but that doesn't work at all in eliminating the top part.
any suggestions? -

It isn't macrovision from what I understand (doesn't that go light then dark then light etc). what happens is every few seconds is shakes pretty badly (like tracking issues). The VCR is brand new, I'm sending it via the RCA video/audio outs. The tapes aren't copywrited because they are home videos (some on hi-8 using a tape vhs adapter). One of the hi-8s worked fine, oddly. Any helP?

Capture cards and VCRs were never meant to escape copyright protection. Either buy a TBC or don't backup tapes that have it.

so where's the cheapest place to get a TBC, and will it work? I'll get a screen cap of whats going on tonight.

I've seen some TBC's on ebay lately, but i'm not sure which ones would work the best. My budget isn't the greatest, so i have my eye on one that's going for 70$US, like i said, i'm not sure if it's the way to go.

One other thought for those of you trying to capture home video. Try capturing directly from the camcorder you taped it on. Even my JVC didn't do too well with my sister-in-law's wedding I taped on my old Panasonic VHS-C camcorder. When I get back to it, I'm going to try capping directly from the camcorder.
