    The term copyright...

I am making a bit of a homepage. At the bottom of other peoples (or companies homepages) I see the little C for copyright and then the year...can I just add my own little C and the year 2004!? What is this meant for?? And if the it says Copyright 2002...does that mean it's out of date, because its now 2004!? Someone please explain this...if you can!!

A copyright doesn't have to registered to be considered copyright. Therefore you can put the little symbol at the bottom of your page to signify it however the chances of that stopping someone from stealing your IP is low.

no...Copyright 2002 means that 2002 is the year you first completed your work and how long your work has been under protection.
