I have a good quality avi at 1236 kps. Here is the info from avicodec "Video : 177 MB, 1236 Kbps, 23.976 fps, res. 512*384 (4:3), DIV3 = DivX v3 MPEG-4 (Low-Motion), Supported" ... if it is at 1236 what would be the best setting for an dvd converion? What would be the best bitrate to get 100% quality yet keep the size as small as possible without quality loss..
    Thanks for the help

Use the bitrate calculator here: https://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm

That calculator will tell you the maximum possible bitrate for your movie, so you can use that when you do your encoding.

i was wondering the same thing - i was testing an mpeg i made with 6000kbits and 4135kbits and both look the same on my computer, but i'm sure it will prob look diff on a tv - Pinnacle's default is 6000 when you capture in mpeg format - the default on that calculator is 6548 - not sure here.....

Well the good thing about that bitrate calculator is that there is no "default" per se. The calculator gives you the bitrate to use based on how long your movie is, what the bitrate of your audio is, and what kind of media you want to fit it on.

So let's say you have a Divx movie that is 2 hours, 30 minutes, and 16 seconds. Let's say you extracted the audio and converted it to a 224 kbits/sec AC3 file. Let's also say you want to fit everything onto 1 DVDR (DVD-5). You would input all that info into the calculator, and it would compute the max bitrate you shoudl use so that everything fits onto 1 DVDR disc. Then you can convert your movie with CBR encoding in TMPGEnc with the calculated bitrate.

If you're still confused, read the DVDRhelp guide about converting a Divx movie with AC3. This guide shows you how to use the bitrate calculator in the overall process: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/186739.php
