  1. Hello all, I have captured an analog stream to mpg2, now I need to trim the file, does anyone know of a simple cutting app. that will cut the beginning and end off the file without doing any re-encoding?

  4. Womble is the finest I've ever used. It makes surgical cuts and editing is quick. It has never created an audio sync problem for me either... regardless of what I've thrown at it.

  5. Interesting. I've tried 2 versions of womble and have yet to make a cut and save it without getting an audio error. Perhaps if they ever make a version that works I'll concider shelling out my $100.

  6. Perhaps if you ever provide mpeg2 streams without errors you won't get audio desynch.
Use PVAStrumento to fix PTS errors in mpeg2 files.

Womble are by far the best mpeg2 apps I've ever used, I never got any error with the 50 capture files I had to cut & merge to make DVDs.
TMPGenc tools never did the job well. (can't open file, can't compute total length, can't write total length, and so one...)

  7. Womble works fine for me both the low end MPEG VCR and the higher end program. It's indispenable for me to remove ads, cut long MPEGs so that they can fit onto two CDR's etc

Milo, I never thought of that being the reason for Womble making "bad" edits. I bet you're right on the money.

  9. I'm not an expert and was curious about something. Do you have to cut on an I-frame with Womble to avoid any recompress on the areas near the cut? If so what's your favorite tool to get the frame number you want to cut with Womble, tmpgenc dvd author?

  10. I can't tell about mpeg-vcr but I guess it's the same behavior:
mpeg video wizard finds itself the (nearest ? next ? previous ?) I-frame of your mark, thus there's no recompression.
But I'd like that womble provides this feature: show frame type at cursor (I/P/B)

TMPGEnc DVD Author shows the frame where you can add a chapter point or do an edit. The frame is highlighted when you get to it. Now if only Womble Mpeg Video Wizard would do the same...

  12. Out of interest does tmpgenc DVD Author have an option to output the edited mpeg2 file for later use (say if you were cutting a large MPEG2 file to fit onto two CDR's) or does it always author the DVD?

No it does not...In fact i've been looking for a damn simple mpeg2 cutting tool that I like...all of the tools mentioned above didn't work well for me. I need one to clip out commercials of an mpeg2 file i captured. I agree that the easiest and coolest one is the one in tmpeng DVD Author but I don't like that authoring software...I prefer ulead dvd workship...its a lot nicer and moer powerful. I just hope ulead will add that feature on their next release.

  14. I would have to jump on the Womble bandwagon on this one. Mpeg-vcr or Mpeg Video Wizard. Both have worked flawlessly for me. No matter how big or small the file. M2 Edit Pro gets a definite honorable mention, but the price is much higher than Womble's offerings.

But a person has to go with what works for them.
