  1. I have a problem when capturong from vhs. One tape works fine and the other starts dropping frames. But I'm not shanging any settings.

    my system : duron 700@884
    512 mb ram pc 100
    40 + 20 gig
    win xp for cpturing
    haupage tv go
    virtual dub

setings : avi uncomprest 25 bit rgb
    352*288 for vcd
    25 fsp for pal

I capture then convert to vcd with tmpeg , burn ,delete the files and defrag before capturing.
Why am I losing frames ??

    thx

  2. I know this may seem odd, but I wouldn't suggest an overclocked PC for capping, capture cards and progs rely very heavily on the system clock for there timings, and performance is worse if you overclock you processor.

  3. Another obvious possibility that you seem to be overlooking is that the tape ITSELF is responsible for the droppped frames. I see this from time to time in my capturing "adventures," as my computer doesn't drop frames for ANY other reason.

  4. I have exactly this same problem. Last night I captured a video which was about 23 gigs, and I only had about 30 dropped frames. This morning, I went to do another and its dropping about 5 frames a second, even though I'm using exactly the same settings. I went back to the previous tape, and it does it with that one too.

I did a defrag, and disabled every single background application, but still no go. Even with sound off it does it.

Its very confusing. I'm running a p3 866 with 512 of pc133 and a seagate IV 60gig 7200rpm drive so I would expect my system is more than capable of capturing at pal vcd settings. I'm using my asus v8200 geforce 3 as the capture card and it obviously works as it did a great job with the other one.

Sigh. Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated. I was wondering if maybe its a problem with virtual dub?

This was also a problem I had when I used VirtualDub for capturing. I followed all the precautions, defrag, shutting down network, antivirus etc. One thing I noticed, if I deleted the first capture and did it a second time the number of dropped frames was less and third capture was even better. I have no explanation other than tape tensioning or temperature stabilizing.

I've since changed over to AVI_IO for the capture and VDub for processing and frameserving.

I hope I have helped, any opinions or comments welcome.

  6. Hello,

I just discovered what the problem was, and I only found the error by pure chance.

I happened to notice that something had changed from last time after all. The WDM video capture driver had set itself back to a default ntsc setting. I'm capturing from pal video's. As soon as I changed it back to pal, my frame drops went from about 10 a second to 0.

This is possibly why so many other people have having seemingly unexplained problems, as there's no way from what I can see of identifying this through virtual dub. I only noticed it when I was attempting to record a test video through xp movie maker.

I hope this helps someone else.

    regards,
