Well, I think the real answer to this question is:
No, there aren't companies doing this kind of transfer - it's very rare. What is more common is for companies to take a mini-DV tape and transfer the entire contents -as is- directly to a DVD complete with a simple "play" menu - not in mpeg2 format. And the knowledge level of the people in many of these businesses may be not very high - so it's not like there's a ready supply of "experts" ready and willing to do a job like this efficiently.
Incidentally, for those who have been wondering where this five hrs of video is going to go....
I originally got the video on a VHS tape, was unable to contact the person who shot it, so I simply transferred it from VHS to mpeg3 using the Adaptec Videoh USB 2 Hardware encoder board; re-encoded the mpeg3's with TMPGenc to fit 5hrs of video nicely on two dvd's (the more important segents were encoded with higher VBR settings) and authored the DVD's with "TMPGenc DVD author" (an outstanding piece of software). Then I found out that the video had originally been shot as DV and transferred to VHS - and I now have the Mini-DV tapes. So now I'm going to re-do the mpegs using a less lossy process, stick them back into the pipe and get an improvement in the quality of video (easier said than done).
This is video of my Daughter's wedding so it's already very behind schedule...

I run a service EXACTLY as you're requesting. If you have any questions, let me know at zooner@aol.com
www.yourtapetodvd.com
Depending on how many tapes you want converted, I charge between 10-15 a piece and that includes a customized dvd case and full menu authoring. I only use ritek media for commerical purposes.
i have gone a step beyond that for some clients and even taken everything I've captured onto an external hard drive, in addition to the dvdr's. These movie files can either be mpeg1 or mpeg2, plus I'll split them into multiple pieces. The reason i give you the original file AND the split file is sometimes the media files are so large windows has trouble opening them and moving around. -

Yes, exactly! It's a new enough thing that finding a place and getting a reasonable quality job without already having a track record would be a shot in the dark. It'd be a fairly high risk of more time wasted and possibly even loss of the tapes etc. May not have spelled everything out well but just major gut reaction was I wouldn't do it with anything important vs doing it myself even if it took getting up to speed. And while the time is a factor for this it's not a life or death type thing, a day or two won't kill anyone or lose a job.
Onetrueday's offer is the first commercial suggestion I've seen that I'd consider a reasonable option. I'd consider someone active on the board about 10 times more likely to be successful and have good results than a random shot in the dark. Either a local to you board member or commercial member would be far better than just any business you can find. And that is damn good pricing to boot. Considering the sentimental value I'd still either get a HD and copy or have a friend with a big one temporarily back up the DV until you've got the tapes and DVD back in hand. Fed Ex etc is beyond anyone's control, and they do lose, destroy, or demagnetize things once in a while, so a temporary backup is still a really good idea until things are back in hand since it's irreplacable footage. If things seem bad with a small delay just think how bad a total loss would be..

I meant to say MPEG2 -not MPEG3

Just my 2cents worth. -
Yes, that's the conclusion I've reached also. It seems to be the only reasonable option - will just have to fit in the extra time for software encoding.
