I thought Chicago (maybe Detroit?) were the crime/murder capitals of the US?
Chicago was only in 2001 or 2002 (can't remember). Now we're down to only about 650 murders a year. Detroit doesn't have as many but it is a small city so its a larger percentage of the population than Chicago. Gary, Indiana is actually the murder capital of the US. Its not too far from Chicago. I've been around there only once in my life, I don't think I will ever go anywhere near that city ever again. New York's murder rate has gone down significantly since 9/11 (although it was right behind Chicago that year, not counting WTC victims) but that doesn't mean there isn't any murders happening there.

Hey, they're able to overthrow your democratically elected government when it's not to the liking of the United States! That's useful...to the corrupt, military-industrial complex.

True - but we don't need them all, just a handful would do. We could flog the remainder to FOX who could use them on "Who wants to marry a Royal" . . or something.

    Pacman,

Strange. One of you Aussies, in the Lordsmurf thread, I think, "Jan. 2, and 80 degrees", said Australia was the driest of all the continents. Not true?

As to murder capitols, I think Washington, DC, our capitol, might take the honors.

It's bad enought that one of our Senators wants to actually GIVE them the right to keep and bear arms for their own defense. Almost unheard of here, not trying to take away.

Numerically, it may actually be lowere there than Chi or Gary.

    Cheers,

    George

It really depends on the geographic location you are talking about in Australia.

80-90% of the Australian population lives on the eastern and western coasts and for the most part those areas recieve rain on a regular basis. It's only once you start travelling into the centre of Australia that you'll encounter desert and drought conditions.

This page here basically gives you a good overview of Australia's weather conditions:

    http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/how/newproducts/images/rainatlas_sample2.shtml

As far as temperature goes, I live in Queensland, one of Australia's more tropical (sub-tropical anyway) and hotter states and today is 30C/90F. It's just an everyday thing to have high temperatures and so people here have things like pools, air conditioners, fans and also go to the beach regularly.

    Pacman,

Do you realize it is Jan 12? We're experiencing 0 degrees F. Telling us it is the middle of summer is not very tactful.

Especially if you've been waiting for the AAA to come jump start your car with its dead battery..again.

But we'll get even, come July, when you have monsoons or whatever and WE'RE on the beach.

    Have a great Summer.

    Cheers,

    George

The temperature was at 39 outside my place on that horribly very hot Xmas day.

I went to sleep that afternoon in a cool bedroom and viewed some rented DVDs later.

Luckily for me, the VideoEzy hire shop as closed on Xmas day as too hot to return the videos.

Christmas Day was on the wrong day, too hot. Australians should have Christmas in July?

I too, visited Manly, on Jan 2nd. The ferry trip from Sydney was very crowded and I enjoyed the windy harbor way from the heat.

On my return at the Sydney Opera House the wind from the harbor was so strong and very wonderfully very cool that evening. What a relaxing time.

This reminds me; make another ferry trip to Manly soon.

    Chris,

Are you saying 103 F? No kidding, very hot. We very, VERY rarely get that hot in SW Pennsylvania, occasionally the high 90s, like 35 C.

Where's Manly, a long ferry ride from Sydney?

    Cheers,

    George

Yes, was this hot on Xmas. I am on the outer south-west fringe of Sydney and the temperature occasionally can get this hot here.

In the city of Sydney is rare to be this hot as close to the sea. It is currently at 82 degree F and this is normal.

Manly is a seaside suburb of Sydney, just north of the heads to the sea. Port Jackson is Sydney Harbor. The distance is only 7 miles from the city and a 30 minute ride.

Manly is a well known tourist attraction just like Bondi Beach.

Like I said very rare on the sea to be this hot, someone did say at 41 degrees C at Manly. This happen only once a year there.

Manly Beach rules for the surfers. I have a mate who runs a surf shop there and he loves the area.

He doesn't want to live anywhere else, however goes to the north coast and Queensland when on vacation.

Manly Beach is an expensive area to buy property and can be very busy with lots of tourists.
