  1. I know how to make best quality SVCD but how can I make best quality VCD?

I use D2SRoBa with DVD2SVCD when making SVCD's and the quality is incredible!

What do you people use to make fine VCD's?

TMPGEnc will create a good quality VCD. Standard VCD's have the following specifications:

    Resolution 352x240
    Bitrate 1150 kbits/sec

These specifications are locked and can't be changed, unlike SVCD's where you can change the bitrate to increase the quality. However, some standalone DVD players can play non-standard VCD’s with higher bitrates. This type of VCD is called XVCD. You can also use TMPGEnc to create these, see the guides to the left for tips.

  5. FYI --

D2SRoba Version 2.7 RC2 supports TMPGEnc encoder w/DVD2SVCD and VCD output. Not on the TYLO site, but I bet if you did a search you could find it.

I use Version 3 w/ DVD2SVCD and CCE when I want to create SVCD's and Version 2.7 with DVD2SVCD and TMPGEnc when I want VCD's. Works great !!

The fundamental problem with VCD is visable artifacts. According to TPMG instuctions, if you soften the picture (a TPMG feature), you can considerably reduce the artifacts and therefor end up with a more acceptable solution within the limits of the VCD standard.

  11. Agreed...

VCD is not the highest quality format. However, VCD (or variations) is a great format when you want to cram as much video as possible onto a CD (i.e. Cartoons for the kid's, etc.) -- where quantity over-rides the desire for the highest quality. However, even though quantity may be the priority, one would still want to put forth some effort in minimizing the amount of degradation.

Each format has it's place and wanting to create the highest quality possible VCD is not an unreasonable request.

  12. My best way to make a VCD:

    * Capture AVI with a lossless compressor at 704x480 (NTSC)
    * Use a good deinterlacer and then a 2:1 bilinear frame size reduction filter (all during capture if you can)
    * Use TMPGEnc with the VCD template to encode the AVI file.

This will give you the best looking VCD you can make with a simple TV tuner card and free software (you do need to have some horsepower and a large hard drive on your PC)

It's called a "filterchain" when you are using filters before encoding to mpeg.

A simple filterchain could be for example to use a noisereduction filter and a color correction filter. A more advanced filterchain could be for example to do this:

    1. Sharpening the picture without producing any artifacts.
    2. Removing artifacts in dark and black areas without loosing any details in the picture.
    3. Removing noise without loosing any details in the picture.
    4. Reducing macroblocks.
