  1. my friend asked me to help them do something with some audio for a project they're doing. i know what they want to do, and i think i know how to go about doing it. however, i may be wrong, so i'll need suggestions and software tips.

    problem:
what i mention now is everything they've told me, so i don't have all the details, but i have most of it. what i'm working with is a single audio file, an MP3, i believe. throughout the song, there are instances where the majority of it is just bass, and in some instances, the majority of it is treble. they're going to play the song on a standard 2 speaker stereo, left and right. one side will have all the bass, and the other side will have all the treble. however, they don't want to just use an amp and/or reciever to increase either the bass or treble of either speaker. they want it already done in the song. when they play it, they want the song to play in sync, with the bass going when it's supposed to, and the treble going when it's supposed. during the bass-parts, only one speaker will be playing the bass, and during the treble-parts, the other speaker will be playing the treble. i think that's all the details i know of what they want.

    my solution:
i was thinking that, since i only have a single mp3 file to work with, i can use a sound editor to play around with it. i need a sound editor that is capable of handling dual-tracks. i can open the mp3 file in one channel, and "copy and paste" it to the other channel, within the sound editor. with the sound editor, i can minimize the bass as much as possible on one side. and with the other side, i can minimize the treble as much as possible. then i can save both tracks as a 2-channel mp3, or whatever format it saves as. it has to save as seperate channels, not just mixed together again. is this how i should go about doing it?

if it is, what program should i use? the program has to be able to work with 2 channels, minimize either the treble or the bass, and save as 2 seperate channels in one file.

    any other suggestions? thanks.

  2. I think Cool Edit Pro (now Adobe Audition) might be able to do that. It will work in the stereo mode but I think it can apply effects to each channel individually, which may help you.

The trial version is available from:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/tryadobe/main.jsp#product=92

You should still be able to pick up the trial version of Cool Edit from the major P2P networks.

  3. SoundForge could do that too - it's excellent, although a little pricey.

Other alternatives are GoldWave (shareware) or Audacity (freeware) - both are very good, although Audacity is a bit limited compared to the others.

By 2-channel file, do you just mean stereo? I presume that's what you mean.

It would be a pretty simple job in SoundForge to open the mp3 (which will open as a stereo file - with two channels - unless it's mono) and edit each channel separately - with EQ etc.. you could do exactly what you're talking about.

You could then just save the stereo file as a normal wav.

    cheers,
    mcdruid.
