If its on a DVD, then it probably isn't DV.

  3. That is a bit of a cryptic response IGH529 for a response to a newbie.

Although you are of course right.

Nerie, once it is on the DVD you will have completed any work you are aiming to do. The dv capture (normally in AVI format) is the stage where you will want to be editing. From there you would then encode to a DVD compliant format such as MPEG2 before authoring a DVD.

In short the DVD stage is the final one, all editing is completed beforehand.

There is loads of stuff in this forum about it all so read away!

View the disk contents in explorer, if there's two folders in there...

VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS (the folders necessary for a DVD compliant disk) then you're buggered.

If there's a file on there called bigboobs.avi (ie. someone has simply archived the DV footage to a DVDr disk) then yes, you could just copy the file back to your PC and edit.

If it's bigboobs.mpg then its a DV file which has been encoded to mpeg2 (the file format for DVD) and whilst unwise yes, you can edit an mpeg2 file (although you'll need to re-encode to mpeg2 (again, unwise).
