    Fastest ripper is a Toshiba (can't remember the model#) DVD-ROM. Next fastest is Lite-On 163 & 166 DVD-ROM's. Don't know about combo drives.

I got an older Samsung 616F, 16X. Gets to about 15X at the end of the rip. It also rips audio (DAE), slowly but error free.

I use a Samsung 352B to rip with and it rips at around an average of 7x. If I changed out the ASPI layer I could prolly get faster rip times, but doing an entire disc in 11 minutes is fast enuff for me.

Remember that dvd burners are not a good choice to rip with, since many are set by the manufacturer to rip very slowly. I got the combo drive so I can save my dvd burner for burning only. After 2 weeks of use, I'm very happy with the 352B.

  6. I've got a Lite-On 163 and it will regularly get up to speeds greater than 12x on single layer discs - I've had peaks over 15x on occasion. Dual layer are obviously slower but it still gets up to 8x + most of the time.

  7. Bodene did you have to update the firmware or anything to get it to 7x rip? or was it out of the box? Also where did you get this drive? Is it the retail one with 8mb buffer or the oem bulk with 2mb buffer?

It's a retail (w/8mb buffer) I got it at walmart. I downloaded a firmware update the first night I got it, so I'm not sure what the rip speed was right out of the box.

BTW...if u get this drive...to download the firmware update u have to download a small file at samsung.com that examines your drive, then downloads the correct update for u. I downloaded it, updated, then uninstalled the update utility. Worked like a charm. They don't have this model listed in the customer support area, but the firmware area has it.
