  1. For producing feature-length (long) productions, would you suggest Avid Xpress Pro or Vegas 4.0; I will be shooting in either 24p or 24p advanced.
Just curious if one or the other is easier for producing 95/etc. minute productions.

they both will work quite well for long form (i use both for this) -- but if you will have to conform or use a lot of EDL to do a matchback .. AVID would be the way to go (with a MOJO) really (or FINAL CUT Pro)..

I'm sorry, but what do you mean by this? I'm new to digital editing.

both used for film work mostly ... if your project is going to end up on film or was transfered from film for editing ...

  5. Are NLE's today made so that one can use another company's effects software. That is, if I edit on Vegas, can I use After Effects or Combustion for FX and not do damage to my 24p footage? Or would you suggest remaining in the same company line of products, especially for 24p or 24p advanced?

you can use boris red (which is a plug in to vegas or standalone) , combustion or after effects (or other software) with vegas just fine ... no issues at all EXCEPT adobe and vegas 29.97 is different slightly (if you edit at 24p you will have no issues) ...

you can frame serve or render out of vegas and import clips into and out of those apps back into vegas --

you may want to check out RED - as it works within vegas ..
