  1. hello
I'm from Portugal and i have a Canopus advc-1394, i allways capture PAL but this week i received a NTSC vhs and i tried to capture but i can't..
I had put the advc jumper in EEPROM (use utility software), then on the advc controller software i changed to NTSC but the result is black and white(the image is stabilized)..If i leave in PAL the video moves up and down like when i put the tape on a PAL only VCR (what is normal), but i'm using a VCR that playback NTSC, and it works fine in my TV...
    can anyone please help me?

    Thanks

  4. Your Canopus ADVC can capture only pure PAL (PAL50) or pure NTSC.

Now your VCR is NTSC compatible, but it doesn’t actually output NTSC. Instead, it converts the NTSC to PAL60, which is a hybrid mix between pure PAL (PAL50) and NTSC. This is standard for all modern VCR’s sold in PAL regions of the world. The reason is because it’s not cost effective to manufactor TV’s that can play both pure PAL (PAL50) and pure NTSC. So they reached this compromise, where by your TV can accept PAL (PAL50) and the hybrid (PAL60). This is why your TV plays it, but your ADVC cannot capture. All capture devices are the same – they won’t accept PAL60. You need to find a VCR that when playing NTSC actually outputs NTSC – a USA spec VRC most probably, although a very small number of VCR’s (some Sony’s afaik) can output all 3 (NTSC, pure PAL & PAL60).

You need a true multi-system VHS VCR that can output any format.

Some have a built-in converter to convert PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL but they are very expensive. You don't need that. You just need one that can play pure NTSC and pure PAL.

As for your TV it may not be able to handle a pure NTSC signal. You need to check on that.

Once you capture the NTSC VHS to your computer it is possible to then convert it to true PAL for final burning to a DVD for instance (or VCD/SVCD).

Just do a google search on "multisystem video" or "multi-system video" and you will find a lot of on-line mail order places that offer the type of VHS VCR you should be getting.

I personally prefer the TOSHIBA models myself especially the one with 6 video heads.

Sorry but the websites that I am familiar with are located all in the USA so I doubt you would want to buy from them since you live in Europe. Even though some offer good prices I don't know if they ship to Europe and even if they do I wouldn't be surprised if the shipping price might be excessive.

Your best bet might be to buy some European magazines dedicated to audio and video as there are usually ads in there for European mail-order places that would carry such equipment.

    P.S.
In the USA a good 6 head Hi-Fi stereo true multi-system VHS VCR is at least $150 if not $200 and the best TOSHIBA model out that I know of is around $240 so that should give you an idea of price (prices listed are US Dollars)
