  1. I have this file that has 2 channel audio, when I try to open it in Tmpgenc nothing shows up in audio source, so when this happens I usually extract the audio seperately using Vdub and then encode them as .mpg file later.

But this time when I try to extract audio using Vdub I get this compression error and it will not extract the audio.

Not sure how to resolve this. Any ideas how to go about it?

  2. You don't have the correct codec installed for this type of audio compression. My guess would be that it is 2 channel Ac3 but to be sure, download Gspot and use it to open your video. It will tell you what codecs you need to play it and if the are installed. If it is Ac3 you need the freeware AC3filter.

Thanks Bugster for responding. I followed your directions and installed Gspot and got the following info

Video Codec - DIV4/div3 - 2 compatible codecs installed (Divx Decoder filter)
Audio Codec - AC3(0x2000) Dolby Laboratories - Codec is installed (Cyberlink Audio decoder)

So according to Gspot I have the codecs needed to play this file, but when I clicked on "Render", I got an error that said

"Render: Partial Failure, some of the streams in this movie are in an unsupported format - 0x00040242: VFW_S_Partial_Render."

Does this make any sense? I am trying to post as much info as possible to describe the problem.

Can't say as I know what the prob is but what I'd do is..

Scan for freezes using vdub-mp3-freze (fix any errors found)
then extract audio with vdub and run it through ac3 fix

  5. Ok, so what you do is save the audio using vdub, but use direct stream copy mode. This will give you a file containing AC3 audio, but with a wav extension and unfortunatley with a wav header appended by vdub. This file can be renamed as file.ac3 and the wav header fixed by running it through ac3fix.exe.

Now what you do depends on what your destination format is. If you are creating a DVD, then you can use the AC3 file directly with your m2v file (mpeg 2 video only) when you author, if you use an authoring package that will accept this. If your target format is (S)VCD, or your authoring proggy does not accept AC3 audio, then use BeSweet or HeadAc3he to convert to wav or mp2, whichever you prefer.

    Thanks dude, It worked!!

I did a direct stream copy in Vdub, saved it as .ac3 file and then used Headache to convert it to .wav file.

However I did run in to another problem with Headache, with one of the .ac3 files that I was converting to wav, I got an error message that said "Bad Syncword at frame 79702. The AC3 stream is probably corrupt!."

Can this be fixed using ac3fix? How do you use that damn software man, I can't figure it out, I used the ac3gui to load a file, then I designate an output location and then press the Process button. It does not seem to do anything, It just says "Command Sent" and I wait and check the location but there is no new ac3 file there.

Is that the way this thing works? Is there a guide or something for this thing that I can refer to?

    Thx everybody for your help!!

Goldwave will extract the AC3 audio from the avi and save it as a wav file. I find it easier than the Vdub>ac3fix>headac3he method.
