Rental Copy of DVDS - Quality ?

Not really Gees, they edit lots of movies here that get too gory or racy. A lot of us never saw Rosemary's baby. The cut and recut Scarface, and the list goes on and on.

In Australia, the rental version is usually the retail version.

It's interesting to note that many UK DVD releases have a "Not for Sale/Rental in Australia or New Zealand" sticker on them.

that's violence (and nudity too... that lion ain't wearing pants!) but it's not cruel, and it's certainly natural....

This has got to be one of the dumbest discussions I have ever read on this forum. A thread like this usually gets 0-2 replies. The question was asked about QUALITY not different editions or censored titles. As far as quality goes, of course it is exactly the same. As for content, that is a whole different story.

the discs that you rent are sometimes different though. but not on content.

I have come across discs at blockbuster that have ads for upcoming movies on them, and then bought the movie later if I liked it....and the ads weren't on the one I bought.

Not quite. It's all down to royalty payments. For every DVD sold a portion of the purchase price goes back to the artist/studio/writer/producer of it. If it is a rental copy it has a far greater potential audience so the royalty portion is much higher. This doesn't only apply to DVDs but any recorded work. Music CDs (and records for anyone old enough to remember thise) also are printed with a 'not for public performance' clause on them. Anyone using music for a public (ie, not for your own personal listening/viewing) performance SHOULD then declare it and make a royalty payment to an organisation (PRS or MPRS in the UK) who pass this on to the artists.

A friend of mine is a professional musician who played on a soundtrack to a TV advert about 3 years ago. At the time he received a payment (about 9p!) for every time it was shown on TV. This advert has now been edited and dubbed and sold to some East European country but still uses the same soundtrack. He has now started receiving cheques on a monthly basis for every time it is shown there. These are even less because the royalty payment is based on the maximum potential audience.

blockbuster in the usa only (i think) has some which are editing for content as they will not carry nc18 dvd's ... i think its only in the usa ..as they do have them in canada (i think) or they are unrated here .. some stuff here gets a pg13 rating while in the usa its rated nc18 ...

they are not edited to fit more on a disk ...

kinda like that lame "turner superstation" where some of the movies are so edited they make no sense .. (blockbuster not that bad)

Once Superstation WGN played one of the Die Hard movies. I forgot about this scene but Bruce Willis opens his mouth and yells, " Yippie kie yay Mister Fillips" I believe in the movie Mr. Fillips was actually M***** F*****. They do some really bad edits and voiceovers in their movie showings. Sometimes leaving out whole scenes.

Warning! As someone already mentioned, those promotional DVDs that Pizza Hut had and even those DVDs you find in the huge bargain bin at Walmart are not necessarily the retail version. My Pizza Hut DVD had mono audio, a single menu, and about 10 mins worth of commercials which mostly involved pizza. BTW it was packaged in a paper sleeve too.

Pizza Hut I can understand but not Walmart. The DVDs use the exact same coverart as the retail version, but the disk inside does not necessarily reflect what is written on the cover. Something smells a little fishy at Wal-Mart, if the studio never released a single sided, FS only DVD...

No but I won't find them for $3.99 there either. I assumed that the DVDs were cheap because they just weren't big sellers. I never assumed they were discounted because they were non-official releases. I have absolutely no problem with them hiring out a studio to remaster the DVD as cheaply as possible, so that they can discount the retail price. But if they strip anything out of the movie then they better damn let me know on the cover.

In any case, I won't shop in their bargain bins anymore.
