Pioneer A07 announced.

Just read over on http://www.doom9.org that Pioneer has announced the A07. 8x -R and +R DVD burning.

This is the upgrade I've been waiting for.

I'm happy with my Plextor PX-708A 8X writer now. Like the Plextor the pioneer starts out at 6x speed then shifts gears to 8x using 4x media. And of course this is just for +R media.

Ooh! Just read the specs that it could read DVD-RAM. Very interested in that possibility because I've got tons of DVD-RAM that I use on my Pany E30 to convert.

Does anyone know when this might come out?

Supposedly it should be out by Christmas...if not under the Pioneer brand name then under some OEM brand like Asus. I don't think Pioneer has stated an official release date.

It hasn't been that quick? I bought my first 104 exactly 13 months ago (it was on tail end of the 104s productiion run) and now we have the 107 looming. It seems that the Pioneers get a 6 month production run before being replaced by something better. I have a 105 as well, skipped the 106, figuring I could wait for a 107 to get "A faster 106"

Everyone keeps talking about the Pioneer A07 when a long time leader in professional optical drives already has an 8x drive on the shelves in stores, Plextors PX-708A. The speed of this drive and realiablity is just as good as my Sony's and Pioneer's. Everyone else is just trying to keep up with Plextor now. And yes it supports Mt Ranier.

From what I understand, the only way Mt. Rainier works in XP is if the drive and its own software supports it. In other words, Windows doesnt work out of the box that way. They plan on this for Longhorn though.

Why pay top dollar for a DVD burner that will be out of date in six months,
try and sell it in six or eight months, and you will be well out of pocket.
There are other DVD Burners that work just as well for half the price, albeit
at 4X for the moment.

I can't imagine how much media will cost to burn at 8x. I already feel current 4x media is too expensive especially when companies are selling them in spindles of 50, 100 and more. Even if 8x drives become more affordable it wouldn't do anyone any good unless they are willing to pay thru the nose for media.

Why would I ever need to sell some of my equipment. With two companies (small ones) I just go out with cash and buy what I want. And the Plextor burns at 6/8x using 4x media. I have 2 PX 708-A's now and they are indeed a stable unit. It appears that alot of folks either don't read much or don't buy much considering some of these off mark answers.

I think what you fail to mention here is BOTH formats burn at 8x In the A07, but not in the Plextor. I've come to trust Pioneers burners myself. This will be the upgrade for me.

I wouldn't plan on buying new PC gear every 6 months - who the hell could be bothered with that! Buy a decent drive now and be done with it. It's only recently that x4 media has even come onto the market, God knows what price x8 will go for.

I'd rather wait for the dual layer dvd9 +r media to be out fist before I upgrade my DVD burner. 2004 is just around the corner so I can hold out until then.
