  1. God, I don't think I could warn you enough about how many bad experiences with Memorex bundles of 100 (mfg looks like CMC Magnetics Corp) I've had.

Obviously the best media I've used is Mitsui golds. Just play flawless in my set-top boxes (Sharp and Haier). But pricey!

I'd love to hear about your media experiences and what brand you've come to love using when burning video files for playback.

  2. 100+ PNY 700MB CD-R's - 1 coaster, drives fault - 3 Lines for writing on
    100+ FUJIFILM 700MB CD-R's Silver - 0 coasters - 2 Lines for writing titles on
    80+ FUJIFILM 700MB CD-R's Lightning bolts on em - 0 coasters - 1 Curve to write on(annoying)
2 Compaq 650MB CD-RW's Countless burns on them 100+ each - 3 lines to write on

I just got a 100 spindle, which I think is TDK.... not sure, they arent in front of me, that I havent tried yet, but they have no lines on it to write on, which I dislike.

    *EDIT*
Dont be shocked if this thread gets moved to Media.

    200+ Digital Research 80min - zero coasters
15+ Imation 80 min - so many coasters that I didn't finish the stack.
10+ Memorex Black early generation all turned to coasters after time
10+ early Comp USA 80 min bulk - many coasters, didn't finish stack
5+ Fuji 80min so far so good, just started using them

Maxell mini CDR 180 and 210 MB sizes, a little "twitchy" with old burner, good now.

The Digital Research were a consistant good buy. I used to get them at BestBuy for $0.35 each. Not the cheapest but very reliable. These disks even survived a house fire that melted and mangled floppies that were right next to them. Further down the stack, some pressed CD's were giving me problems from the heat. I was very impressed with them. You can bend them until the 2 sides touch, and still no defects. Just don't scratch the top layer or the reflector scrapes off.

I am yet to finish experiment, but I washed a few(coasters) in soapy warm water, 'cos I put my cuppa's on them, and I found that Imation 70-80min with the shiny top, the stuff started to peel off. This was a worry to me as we all know DVD players can warm the disc to quite a warmth?
I have also made quite a few coasters with these discs??
Next I did an Akai (cd-r 700MB/80MIN), not a problem, and I use these on a regular basis now, I have not had any complaints from people I have lent them to, or any CD's or movies I have backed up myself!!
As I said, yet to experiment with other types, but as soon as I do, I'll post back here.

  7. don't understand this thread, there's already media ratings on the OTHER section. and unless the media is using faked codes, it's more important who the manufacturer is, not what name is on the media. saying "memorex is awful" is not helpful AT ALL -- what speed, - or +, what media code, and what specifically happens? that said, tdk 4x+ and memorex 4x+ (RICOH discs) perform flawlessly for me burning-wise and playback-wise.

This thread started out in the SVCD forum, and was asking about CD media. That's why the first few posts did not list any DVD disks.

As I said in another post last week... I've been spending far too much time here since quitting my job. Not much has gotten past me the last few weeks.

Should I just toss this new spindle of Philips CD-Rs, they are CMC. Id rather throw unburned CD-Rs away that are junk, then waste my time backing-up to them, only to have them fail in 2 months.

You could use them as very temperary storage. If Disney could get a hold of them, they will start using them to protect their movies

You could also try returning them for a partial refund, or send them back to the "manufacturer" explaining what a load of garbage the disks are.

I use my CMC discs as temp storage or for one-offs (giving things to other people). I never use them for my personal work. I use good discs for myself.

  17. TDK 2x DVD-R, man. ID turn out to be MXL = Maxell, 40+ Burns, 0 Coasters.

It is the 20 spindle from Target, has a picture of 2 kids on it and says "For General Use".

Just started burning with my friends Verbatim DataLife's in 25 pack from Sam's Club... They turn out to be RITEKG03's on the man. ID. I can only burn these at 1x, but they seem ok... Playing flawless on set dvd player. No Coasters yet either... Know if these last, as in shelf-life?

Memorex +R 4x manufactured by Ricoh. Never had a problem burning on my LG 4040 at the maximum speed and never had a problem playing on my first or second generation Panasonic A120 or my RP 91 DVD players.

  19. TDK armoured disks (+R). Over 500 with no coasters.

Nice thing is "normal" price for them even at retail stores is less than $2 per disk -- they take labels extremely well, and you can often find them on sale for $1.50 a disk or less.

  20. Bought a Fujifilm 50 pack, $14.79 + $4MIR at Best Buy and transfer off of the CMCs. I'm keeping some of the CMCs I burned around and im conducting tests vs PNY. I'm storing some like I normally do, and I put a PNY and CMC in my car, ill check em out from time to time to see how the data holds up on em.

Even if the CMC are ok, I feel better knowing the CVDs are on solid media I've used before and trust.
