    I was under the impression that not much could happen, but a friend of mine has told me that when he plays a video clip under WMP9 his IE opens and the system crashes ! He thinks this is down to a URL "embedded" in this MPG header - I've never seen this or heard of this happening before I am going to visit him soon to get a closer look at this.

    Can anyone shed any light on this ?

    Could it just be WMP going looking for a codec? Maybe see if it still happens if he disables internet access?

    He swore it was opening a URL in IE and that the system was crashing. Is this even possible ? Seems unlikely and I would have thought that if you could crash a machine using just a video clip it would have raised its head before now.

    I can remember Security Updates for Windows Media Player from version 6.4 onwards.

    Some media files can contain URLs that Windows Media Player will try to open.
    I think that this 'feature' could have been exploited and various code could have been executed on the unprotected pc.

    A search on Microsoft for Windows Media Player Security Update will lead you in the right direction.
