Hi everyone. I decided to make a new tower just for video editing. I won't need a new monitor, keyboard or anything like that since I will be using my old stuff. I already have the drives and everything,. What I need is a cpu, mobo, ram and case. What does everyone recommend? I want the best performance I can get. I would like fast encoding but I am only going to spend $1000 at the most. What would everyone do? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Hatz

Mobo - MSI 865pe Neo2
CPU -- at least the P4 2.8 w/ 800fsb
RAM - get namebrand Dual Channel DDR 512mb should be enough
Case -- Get a case with lots of room and at least 3 case fans. 2 back 1 front.
for good prices go to www.pricewatch.com -
Thanks for the reply. I was looking at the P4 3.2ghz but its so much money. Is there really that much of a difference between the 2.8, 3.0, and 3.2.? I know there is in price.........hehe.
I just really want to speed up my encoding times from my AMD 2100+. Will anyone of these speed it up considerably? Im sick of having to render a DVD for 10 hours.
Case I was going to go with another Antec server case........lots of room and lots of fans. Ram I was going to go with Muskin I think. I think they are a decent company........any other companies that are better?
Mobo I will probably go with what you suggested.
Thanks again for the replies.

for the difference b/w 2.8 - 3.2 check out these graphs. They compare encoding times. Then you can make a more educated decision on cpu.

Enjoy the new comp. -
My tower does video processing almost 24 by 7
Mobo - ASUS P4p800 delux - price about 129 - Why ?
Fastest around with Intel Chipset but utilizes hyperpathing (ASUS found a loophole) Has VERY much onboard and supports DUAL DDR ram meaningh you DDR dimms work in tandem instead of Linearly
ALSO has TWO yes TWO raid controllers SERAIL ATA RAID by Intel and VIA RAID (which I am using with 4 capture drives) AWESOMe boatrd and NEVER seems to get hot.
P4 - 2.8 800 mhz - VERY reasonably price in comparision with the 3.2
Cost 263.
Maxto ATA 133 drives , 120 GIG cost 99 each includes shipping ...Recommend at least 3 (1 for system) 2 for RAID 0 array
Total 200
Sound, mobo comes with execellent onboard
Firewire, it has it
USB 2.0 - has it
etc etc
Video card ...Thats a doozy - And you will need to choose ...150 to 200
Cost I have given you is about 780...You can add from there
I can give more specifics if you like -
Well Acro..........that sounds like a really good setup and pretty much doubles my XP2100+ chip. I think that sounds pretty good.
What type of RAM would you guys consider.........is anything over 512 overkill? From other people I hear the most you need is 512 for encoding and what not.
Video Card I might just go with a geforce 4 Ti4600 like I got now.....they are dirt cheap now or would you reccommend an ATI card. And I really like that RAID setup they got.
Any other things I should know about.......I've built computers before but not one just for video editing and encoding. I have a capture card and everything. The card I have is the Dazzle DVC2 and it seems to work fine. All suggestions are welcome and encouraged.
Thanks very much.

I have 1 Gig (2 512's ) which really is overkill. They make really nice MATCHED sets of 256 by 2 (512 total) that compliment the DUAL DDR method. They are by GEIL and OCZ?
The raid really makes it though. Right off the scale. I have 4 drives in an array (2 and 2 ) so I can go back and forth. 4 x 120 gig drives.
Then I have 2 other drives, system and a backup to the system
Here is my case
