Hi,
I encoded my DVD as a VOB file with 0Sex. I selected the english subtitles to be copied too. Then, I use ffmpegX to do a VCD (with quick mpeg 1 quick preset, adding only the high quality option), wich seems to give better results than mpeg4.
What I would like to do is create a subtitle file to be used in mplayer with the extract option from the VOB, but nothing seems to work :
If I choose Burn, nothing happens. With .srt I only get error messages in the terminal window. .idx seems to work as two files are created one of about 40kb and a .sub file of 3.5 MB. But then nothing appears in mplayer. I selected the .sub file to be used as subtitles and checked Mac os roman as well as 8859-1 as the default font but with no results.
Any clue about how it works ?
Thank alot.
Results 1 to 4 of 4

It's quite unlikely that you can get better results with VCD's small image size than with a properly sized mpeg4 file.Originally Posted by jubneq
Burn can only burn to mpeg-2 so CVD and SVCD, not VCD.Originally Posted by jubneq

This is a VobSub format subtitle file. Mplayer GUI is currently unable to play it, but you can play it with ffmpegX "play" button (load the .idx file in the "Load Subs.." field, also locate an .IFO file to set palette colors).Originally Posted by jubneq

I agree with major on the point that a correctly sized MPeg4 is much better than vcd. I was into that phase in my video life also, when divx was so F*bleep*in hard to do. with 7d, i have made 2 perfectly siynced, dvd quality, fit on 2 cd movies. It just takes about 40X longer than mpeg 1. Bu the results are astonishing.

Thank you very much for the answer.
The thing I said about the quality of the mpeg1 format was due to the fact that with mpeg4 (at 1500 kb/s) I always get lots of apparent pixels in the dark colors, while with mpeg1 (at 1150 kb/s) the image is always soft, even if it is not as crisp as with mpeg4. But overall the pixel thing disturbs me the most. This is why I prefer VCD format. In both case I used ffmpeg engine.
Regarding subtitles, is there a way to make a subtitle file that would be playable with mplayer or VLC ?
This is the error message I get with .srt :

I would also like to mention that pressing [q] during encoding has no effect, neither has the kill command. The only way I found to stop encoding is to force quit ffmpeg from the process viewer. I was wondering if that can be harmful in any way.
Thanks again.
